Unhappy 1992 E40D Transmission Problems

I've had this truck for four years and have been unable to drive it for almost three of those years. I've been told that I need a new transmission. So it's been sitting because I don't have the money to fix it. I've been researching and have found that it may just be a sensor problem and was hoping someone else could give me a better idea without having to shell out 1700.00 to get the whole thing rebuilt. Here's what it's doing: it hard shifts into 1,2, and into 3rd, expecially on hills. If I try to manually shift it seems to be a bit smoother. Can anyone tell me is it's just a sensor of so I need a whole new transmission.

Thanks

Have you check to see if there is any transmission codes? Sounds like maybe a solenoid fault and the trans has gone into "limp" mode by increasing line pressure in the transmission

Why not bring it to a couple of transmission shops and see what they say?

it sounds to me like it's more likely to be a snesor problem or something electronic than needs a rebuild. Typically a hard shift is something wrong with the electronics, a soft or slipping shift is more typical of things that need to be repaired inside the box.

Hope this helps,

G

Possibly the range sensor...I need a little more info to lead you in the right direction though. Such as, 1. high, early, or normal shift timing, 2. flashing O/D cancel lamp or check engine light, 3. Are shift points the same at all throttle positions? If all shift points are the same no matter where you are in the throttle I would look at the TPS. Hopefully this gives you an idea as what to look for, but your complaint is still somewhat vague...Best of luck.

First, is the fluid level full? Sounds silly but a buddy installed a tranny and towed it to have them tell him it was about 6 qts low (new trans install). hahahahaa

If that's good consider changing the filter (screen), drain the converter, and most of the ATF. Fill 'er back up and

Do you have/have access to an Ohm meter? If so shoot me an email and I'll attach the way to test the solenoids in the tranny. I believe there are 4 of them (shift 1, shift 2, converter lockup, converter coast). Should take ya about an hour.

$1700 to run through an E4OD isn't totally off base but I've seen quality builds for $1000 locally...I scooped up one from a '92 E150 for $50 (yes $50) that's got 6K on it since rebuild.

I still am looking for a few extra 4x4 E4OD cores!

The E4OD isn't the best of trannies stock but can be a bad motha' when worked up by the proper person...

Keep your eyes peeled for deals, they are out there.

Same problem

I have a 1994 f150 with the same trans and it shifts very hard out of first gear. It just started doing this about 2 years ago it doesn't seem to be getting worse. I took it to a tranmission place and they told me i needed a new trans. I didn't know about the sensor on the trans i'll have to check into that because that seems like it could very well be the problem.

This may be off base for your transmission but in the 4R70W transmissions if the 1-2 accumulator lower spring breaks, it will cause a hard 1-2 shift. Also, the 4R70W transmissions have a design flaw in the piston in the 1-2 accumulator. It may turn sideways and jam. The 98 Mark VIII 4R70Ws had the improved design. It is easy and cheap to change this in that trans because you can get to it without removing the valve body. I changed the piston and springs in my 95 Mark VIII trans and it didn't take long to do it. While I was at it, I used a different spring in the bottom to quicken the shift. The Mark has a notoriously slow shift from 1 to 2.
