Torque Converter Plug Torque

Am changing fluid in my E4OD transmisiion ('98 F-250 Light Duty)and was wondering if anyone happens to know the correct torque for the torque converter drain plug. My '97 thru '99 Haynes Manual doesn't even mention that you can drain the torque converter, let alone give torque values. (pretty poor) The '98s definately have a drain plug, just wondering how much torque they need .

I removed mine with a torque wrench and made a note of how much torque it took to cause the bolt to turn. I used that amount of torque when I re-installed the bolt. Sorry, but I did not make a permanent record of how much torque it took.

I've never seen a torque value either.

I used my anatomical torque wrench.

I cranked on it until my wrist popped

Seriously- it is a pipe thread, so tighten it until snug, then a bit more. You'll have a feel for how hard it was to break loose, so apply that when you re-install it.

According to Ford Technical Service manual, they say to use a new plug each time you remove it (little overboard, but I guess just to make sure it won't leak) torque to 19 lb-ft.

New plug every time sounds like a good idea. The threads are very fine and seem easy to strip. And, man would that suck to strip that out!

Thanks for the input! Was recently told that the replacement plugs at Ford come in bags of 5. Apparently the reason they tell you to always use a new one, is that they they come with sealant on the threads.
