Question Neutral or Brakes

in city driving where you have to go through a series of traffic lights, say 8 lights, and the light changes for about 3 to 5 mintues, do you put your gears in Neutral during stops, or do you still have it in Drive with the brakes applied?

are there any pros and cons? will it hurt the transmission?

Please, Joe, tell us why you'd do such a thing

you won't hurt tranny waiting at a light in drive with brake on or in neutral. what could hurt is if you're on an incline while waiting at a light and the incline is so steep that you can leave it in drive and not roll forward with your foot off the brake. that puts a strain on your tranny.

I don't understand why that would be any worse than having your foot on the brake holding the truck. How does the transmission know that the brake is holding it or the incline is holding it?

Most owners manuals (F150s included) advocate putting the trans in park or neutral if you are to be at a standstill for 3 minutes or more. ????

The incline is not holding it, the incline is causing it.
Either the brake is holding it or the transmission is holding it

and it is 'pressure to force the transmission to operate in mode not indicated by the gear selector, i.e. Reverse'.

If you mean the truck will roll backwards on an incline while in drive, I agree that this would cause more stress on the transmission.

If you mean an incline where the truck will stay not moving with your foot off the brake, I don't see how that would be any different than being on the same incline with your foot on the brake. In both cases the truck isn't moving.

The truck isn't moving cuz the transmission is keeping it from moving backwards. In other words...it's working *hard* to keep it going nowhere!

It isn't worth arguing over. It's Caseys' truck to drive any way he wants.

At least he knows where the Transmission Forum is when the time comes.

If I put my truck in neutral I'd have my brakes on anyway so why bother. If I was waiting for a train to go by I might put it in park so I could do something else while I wait.
Besides it doesn't hurt anything and you don't have to feel stupid when you get distracted and step on the gas in neutral.

What the?

I'm just lazy and don't feel like keeping my foot on the brake.
