F-250 tranny

Looking into buying a used F-250, mid 90's model, but I can't decide whether to go with an automatic or manual. I used to own a '97 F-150 w/an automatic, and was on my 2nd tranny before 100K miles. Anyone know if the F-250 auto trans. was the same as the F-150, or was it a beefed up version. Did they use the same tranny for gas and diesel, and also would going with a manual tranny be a more reliable option. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben

they used the e40d in the f250 as well as in the 150 from what I have heard here. in 99 they beefed it up a litte and called it a 4r700 still a pos

it is the same pos in the 250, same trans in both gas and diesel. you can get them rebuilt so that they will never go out.

the 5 spd's have a problem with the dual mass flywheels going out (clutch) you need to replace it with a LUK clutch. also have a problem with sychros going out -in higher milage trucks
