Unhappy Is my E4OD dead?

HELP!!!

Got the following symptoms:

1) Loud moaning in 1st gear (follows engine RPM) but quiet in other gears

2) Some grinding while in 1st, especially at low speeds (driveway, stop-n-go)

3) Slips a little at takeoff

4) Fluid level OK, not frothy, but has silver tint (no flakes, just 'color')

Truck has 160K miles, orig trans and engine. I was going to d a fluid change before I went on vacation NEXT WEEK! (AARRGH!!) Last fluid change, I also did the filter.

Also, has a slow coolant leak. Don't know if this is related, as I've not overheated it since I changed radiators 2 yrs ago.

Please help! I promised my wife we'd see snow for the holidays. Now I gotta beg my mom to borrow a vehicle.

Sounds like rebuild time but I'm not familiar with the E40D. If you have some time you can attempt a rebuild yourself. Get a service manual for your tranny such as this from ebay. I ordered one for my 4R70W tranny. Haven't got it yet but figure it's good to have around. Bought it from Phoenix Transmission. Here's one of their rebuilt trannies. Not sure how good these guys are though. Still waiting for that manual to arrive in the mail but it's the xmas rush now. www.phoenixhardparts.com

Good luck.

Thanks, p_ferlow...

It's bad timing, but not unexpected. Unfortunately, I don't have the skill, experience, tools, or time to do the job...so...I guess it's home-cooked meals for a few months. =)
