4x4 not working
4x4 not working
Help,
Just started snowing in NJ and I tried to put my 97 4.6 auto with the lever for four wheel drive f150 in to 4x4 mode and nothing happened. The 4x4 light came on but it was still in 2 wheel drive. I even tried 4x4 low. The same thing. Is there a fuse. If so which one on the block. I do not have the original owners manual. Please help.

Ditto...same here, also in NJ, while driving back from NYC tonight I was slipping pretty bad, and thought the roads were all frozen, got to my driveway and noticed I was only on 2 wheels. All the lights come up and I hear the click but front wheels refuse to turn. Any Ideas???
Go out and shift the truck in and out of 4x4 about a dozen times also try it while moving. If no luck there is a electronic shift motor under the truck (near or on tranny i believe) sometimes it sticks try tapping on it but don't get crazy... lol
4x4 still not working
Buck dropper,
A guy at work told me the front hubs are engaged via vaccum motor. Is this the electric motor you are speaking about? I tried about 20 times last night and today. No good. I can remember reading on some other web site that the vaccum line might get moisture or condensation in it. Add freezing weather and you get an ice blockage in the line that negates the actuation of the hubs. Does anybody know about this? Is this info correct?
Help.

Just want to let you know that I have fixed the problem, if you hear the clicks like it's engaging and see the 4X4 lights are on, just crawl under your truck and locate a plastic shield (cover) on the front axle.
Behind the plastic shield there's a actuator which is suppose to operate via vacuum, spray some wd-40 on the actuator and work it with your hand couple of times, push the actuator in, the 4X4 is engaged pull out it's on 2WD.
I do not know if my vacuume line is leaking or the actuator has failed so I've just left the switch on 4X4 high with actuator pushed in, till I can get it to the shop next week.
Nice to have the 4X4 again.....try it I'm sure it'll work.

gentlemen, just as an after thought it's always a good idea to put your truck into 4x4 once a month, just too make sure it works and circulate the fluids, just be careful when in 4x4 max adviseable speed is 45mph.

you said it, put it in once a month to keep it workin good. and my dealer told me "you can go as fast as you want in 4 wheel, the only thing that suffers severly is your gas milage, he also said that you can engage it at any speed too. its just when you are going 70 and pop it in it will make one HE!! of a noise.
