Transmission Shudder

Hello,

I have a 4R70W transmission and I just changed the fluid in the pan and T/C, along with the filter. Just lately it seems that I have a shudder while accelerating from a dead stop. Doesn't happen all the time, but on occasion. I haven't been able to isolate it from being cold or warmed up. I checked the fluid level after changing it and while warm and it was ok. Haven't checked it as of late but there has been no leaks or anything, so I don't believe it's low. When I drive it again I will check it.

But none-the-less.....anyone have any idea what it could be? Seems I've heard of this "shudder" before. It didn't do it before I changed fluid.

Thanks,

I've also heard of the 'shudder', but it was when running old fluid (mine did it too, but when I had mine changed, it's not done it since), but since you say you just changed it and I'm sure you used the correct fluid. You didn't say what fluid you changed it to, but I'm sure you used the correct MERCON V for it. My e4od (4r100) uses MERCON.

Good Luck!

My shudder fix

I had been blessed with the infamous tranny shudder a year or so back. Minne occured around 35 - 40 mph and often times just after the trans shifted down. Had the fluid changed and that helped for a bit, then it returned but no worse than before. Heard about "LubeGuard" additive to help with the shudder...and it did!! 8 ounces or so did it. No more shudder since then. Go find a little red bottle of the stuff and see if it helpe. Just a few bucks and it can't hurt.

Question

Hey DC...

Any luck on the shudder? Curious to know if you tried anything to get rid of it.

Nope....Nothing yet. Haven't even driven it since over a week ago. I've got an old Buick I use for a daily driver.

But I do know it only happens when taking off from a stop. Haven't noticed it otherwise. I was told by a friend to check the "carrier bearing". Will do when I can.

Tranny fluid I used was Amsoil. It meets Mercon V specs. Drained the converter also.

If it keeps up I might try the Lubeguard. I'll be driving it this weekend. I'll get underneath it also. I'll find out more.

DC Larson...

I noticed that you're in Montana. I grew up in Billings. When I was 23, I made a wrong turn in Wyoming and ended up in Philadelphia. I'm still trying to work my way back!

Where abouts do you live?

I was born n raised/grew up in Sidney. You go thru the oilfield also? After the boom & bust(70's-80s') I went to college in Bozo and now I live in Helena.

Got a buddy from Froid, north of Sidney bout 50 miles, that's a banker or somethin in Duncansville, PA. Don't know where thats at.

Sidney...Froid...

DC...

The wind is blowing thru with a bit more gusto than usual. The best is to come in the early AM. And the news people are whipping people into an unnecessary frenzy again with this hurricane thing. I'm used to Montana storms...wind, rain, hail, snow and wonderfully cold temps...just not used to how people out here react to inclement weather.

Surprisingly...my Mom and grandparents (now just grandmother) are from Froid. Had an uncle in Sidney (now in Washington state) that did siesmology work during the oil boom.

And...I have pedaled my bike across McDonald pass on a cross country trip years ago.

Is the bankers last name Walender by any chance?

Small world aint it!!

Hey Rottie,

I know a lot of folks from Froid...kinda my stompin grounds during the boom. Used to "doodlebug" with a guy name Kemo. I know a lot of Smiths(the banker guy) and Ericksons from Froid. My folks best friends were the Krogedahls that ranched and farmed east of Froid. I hunted up there since I was 10 years old. I'm 45 now.

Some of my best huntin days when I was a kid are from up there. In one day I got 2 dear(nice 4 pt buck and doe) , a doe antelope and limited out on pheasants. Then as the sun was going down we tried to sneak up on geese. They flew off (about a thousand maybe) and one lone goose flew by way high in the air. I lead real far and cut loose a shot and nailed him. Surprised my Dad and Merle. They had there backs turned havin a smoke.

I was all of 13 years old. My best day ever. Three bullets and 9 shot shells. We were allowed 8 pheasants in possession back then. I was cuttin'em up that day!

My truck is still doing that shudder. Only from a dead stop tho. I couldn't tell but could it be the rear end? I just filled it full of synthetic Amsoil the other day. Didn't add any additive. Was told I didn't need to.

DC,if you have changed the fluid to MerconV and its still shuddering might be time to look at the torque converter.

Thanks Guys,

Been out of commission lately. Ill.

It's still doing it. Been driving it a lot lately. Just upon take-off. Doesn't do it when I get on it while driving down a street or road. Also.....when I slow down to a stop sign and not completly stop......then get on the gas to go..there is a lag, where it seems it doesn't engage right away and kind of clunks into place. Any relation? How do I check the torque converter.

Thot I would update what has happened with my shudder.

I took it to the Ford Garage and let them take a look at it. The mechanic drove it around...first thot it was missing.....then came to the conclusion that it was the clutch packs in the Rear End. I have Traction Lok. Two little bottles of friction modifier has cured it. I was told that when I use Amsoil as the rear fluid that I wouldn't need the additive. WRONG! Don't let anyone tell you that. Lucky it hadn't been doing that shudder too long. He quoted replacing clutch packs at $675.

Two bottles of additive was only $7.50 total. It was the $72 labor charge that pissed me off. Oh well....better than $675.

Man I thot sure it was from the tranny.

Unhappy Shudder

I recently changed the diff lube in my 03 SCrew to Amsoil Series 2000 75W140 and was beginning to feel a shudder when backing out of my driveway.

I ordered the 75w140 because thats what the owners manual said to use but when I got under it and pulled the cover the tag on the rear said 75W90.

When I add the posi-lube I'll switch back to 75W90. Ford probably went to the 75W90 to help their fuel mileage like they did with the 5W20 oil.

I was starting to belive that I was having tranny problems but I'll add some posi-lube and see if that helps out.

Which Amsoil lube did you put in your diff?

Hey Wiggles,

I put in Amsoil Series 2000 75W-140. The 75W-140 is what it said in the manual. Never thot to look at the tag. Amsoil now has their own additive. But the Ford brand seems to have worked. If it has been "shuddering" for a while....you should fix it quick. Sounds like I was lucky or it could have cost me plenty.
