Many times I have a hard time getting into 1st gear from neutral at a stop.It is a 99 f150 v6 with a 5speed.

 

This happens to mine every once in a while, just double clutch it then put it into 2nd then up to 1st. If that doesn’t work then something is wrong with your transmission.

My truck does the same thing, once in a while. My '94 F150 did the same thing.

 

I also have a 99 F150 5-spd with a 6 cyl. And it happens to me too. It happens most of the time when I come to a stop on a down hill. I sometimes can't get it into any gear until I let it roll. I've tried the double clutch and that hasn't worked. It becomes a real problem when I am stopped on a downhill and need to get it in reverse.

Does anyone know why this happens and what the fix is?

Like the others have said it does happen and is somewhat common. Nothing to worry about...

 

My '98 does the same thing. I had the fluid changed and that helped, but didn't completely fix it. What I have found is the following little routine that works great for easing it into 1st gear when stopped.

1) Push in clutch.
2) Push shifter easily towards first, don't force it. If it goes in, great. If it doesn't, without letting the clutch up, go back to neutral and then gently back into first in one continuous motion. It should go in easily.

I notice that when you try to engage first and it doesn't go in, I feel/hear a little clunk. I think that the synchros give the gears a little bit of a turn and the clunk is the gear lash (play) that you hear being taken up in the tranny. When you move the shifter back to neutral, the gears rotate slightly in the opposite direction again and since a rotating pair of gears is easier to engage than a stationary pair of gears, they engage easily.

Try this and post back about your results. This may help others or it may just be a quirk with my truck.

occasionally gears are just "in the wrong place"; a normal thing. what i do is engage 1st in the last 3 feet when rolling to a stop. goes in without fail every time and doesn't wear the synchros.

 

The 5 speed is a Mazda POS and is a discrace to Ford. I have a '99 V8 4.6L and I can bearly get the POS into gear most of the time. I wish mine would just completely tear up but I don't know what I can replace it with.
