Having slipping probs after Transgo install...

A few days ago i installed the Transgo shift kit into my 4R70W, and i noticed that when i got it warmed up, it would slip going into first from a dead stop and into reverse, but it would still roll slowly. Also, when cruising at 40mph, it would want to downshift and slow down.

So thats when i realized i forgot to install that bracket thats in the kit, with the spring for the pressure release (the part that goes over the part where u have to drill the two horizontal holes in the valve body)

So i got the bracket installed, and while i was doing that, i noticed the 2nd accumulator was seated crooked over the snap ring. So i pushed it up, and got it seated back even with the rest of the valvebody.

On the road, it still slightly slips going into first and reverse, but the problem with downshifting at 40mph was fixed.

I am still concerned about the slip going into first and reverse from a dead stop. Does anybody have any ideas on what the deal is?

I need answers quick if possible, but until then, thank you for your effort!

I forgot to add that I DID put in all the 7 check ***** in the appropriate places in the valve body, but when i was emptying my catch pan from the install, i found an 8th check ball. I dont have any clue on where it should be, but i KNOW that i put 7 check ***** back into the valve body.

Without the pressure release system in place you could have seriously damaged the unit. By the way, I normally don't even install that part of the kit as it doesn't work. I've see 400 lbs. of line pressure with that valve installed- I suspect that it was higher than that but when your guage pins at 400 and then sticks out like a clothes line before it blows off the hose, it's hard to determine actual pressure! I asked a Transgo rep about this while I was at a seminar and he really didn't have much that he could say. Don't get me wrong- its a great kit but drilling the VB and installing the spring and bracket, to me, is a waste of time.

When you say that i could have damaged the unit, what unit are you talking about? Hopefully not the whole tranny, but is this something that can be fixed?

Thanks for your help Transdude!

Also, this problem only occurs when the transmission has warmed up. If that helps...

Yes, by the unit I mean your transmission. Bear in mind that without the valve in place you will have no line pressure rise and you will quickly burn up the trans. When I say that I don't install it I also mean that I don't drill the valve body casting and therefore you don't need the valve either.

Well if the transmission had no fluid pressure, wouldnt it not shift into gear at all?

I am taking it to the tranny shop tomorrow, i figure it will probably need a rebuild. A standard rebuild includes new clutch bands for all the gears, would that be all that would be damaged from this?

Thanks for your help again!

A regular rebuild normally includes an overhaul kit, clutches, bands, bushings, etc. Anything else that it may need won't be known until it gets opened up. -John
