E4OD Fluid Change Recommendations?
I have a 94 F-250 with a E4OD with 55k miles. I'm getting ready to change tranny fluid and was wondering if I should use regular Mercon or switch to Mercon V? Is there any other maintenance besides the filter I should do while I have the pan off?
I have a 97 Lincoln Mark VIII with a 4R70W and I switched it to Mercon V which was highly recommended on models back to 1993. There is also a 1-2 shift accumulator piston and spring upgrade also highly recommeded. I see some F-150s use the 4R70W but didn't see any posts regarding that upgrade. Perhaps the truck trannies are a little different. Just curious.

Don't use MERCON V in an E4OD. MERCON is the correct fluid. MERCON V is the correct fluid for the 4R70W in the Mark, but it isn't good for an E4OD. There are compatibility issues with some of the materials in an E4OD.

Confused about step 5A
Mark,you say to run the engine till you see air;is fluid going to come out first then air bubbles?If you say to keep doing this till the proper amount of fluid is in, there wont be any fluid....??????I guess i'm not seeing the whole picture from where you say to run it till you see air????????Ok,so i drain the pan;add the amount I drained then run the motor ;will this push that fluid out you just put in?And if you keep doing this,it seems there will be no fluid left.....???????Thats why i'm confused.
First you open the cooler line and start the engine. About 5 quarts will come out, then some air bubbles. Shut the engine off and refill the transmission with as much fluid as just came out. Restart and after about 5 quarts comes out you'll get air again. Stop the engine and refill with as much fluid as just came out.
There are about 17-18 quarts in the transmission. You need to run about 20 through the system to make sure you get almost all of the old stuff out. What you are adding will be the last to come out. The old fluid will come out first.

Is it necassary to run the gears (park thru low1) each time before you refill again?And being mine is a 4R70W ,I want to change my filter and add a drain plug for future use.So after i drain the pan,I add what I drained,run the motor till air is there,refill with what came out,doing this procedure until I have gone thru 13quarts.Correct?Thanx for the patience with me.....just want to do it right the first time.
You only need to run it through each position once.
I think it might more like 15 quarts to do the change.
If you want to drop the pan, drain it first. Remove the cooler line and run the engine until you see air. Shut the engine off and remove the pan. It will be nearly empty. That's a lot easier than dropping a full pan.

Mark - any reason this method won't work on a 1994 F250 5.8 L? Will I find the transmssion model no. on the bottom of the transmission pan, if you need that to answer. It's an automatic with overdrive. Thx much for your help.
My 2000 F1504r70W had a drain plug in the torque converter that made it easy to drain all of the fluid. Check to see if your F250 has the plug.
I had a 95 Mark VIII for 7 yrs. I loved that car. I replaced the fluid with Mercon V when the TQ manual lockup started slipping giving that running over a railroad track feeling at low speed. It also had a drain plug in the TQ.

The method, in general, will work for any Ford automatic transmission.
One important update, though: In 2003, Mercon V WAS incompatible with the E4OD. However, its formulation was changed after that period and may now be used in the E4OD.

The model number of the trans is not anywhere on the trans. The only overdrive trans with a 5.8L was the E4OD. This works exactly the same for an E4OD as a 4R100.
