Auto Tranny problems in 1999 F-150

Hello every. I just bought a 1999 F150 5.4 4X4 Automatic. I have just noticed that I am leaking tranny fluid. It's a slow leak but dripping on the exhaust and making a horriable smell. I got a coulpe of questions for you all.

1. I checked the level of tranny fluid and noticed that when hot it is just over the full mark. Is it possiable that the extra fluid is leaking out?

2. How much does a tranny rebuild cost on a 4X4 on average?

3. Anyone know of a good tranny shop in Austin Texas?

Thanks a Million!

Brian

Fluid Removal

One way you could remove the fluid is by sticking a length of small plastic tubing or vacuum line down the dipstick hole and siphon it out.

You are measuring on the stick while the engine is running correct?

Which Transmission do you have? If you look on the door jamb at the code a "U" is the 4R70W and an "E" is the 4R100. I would imagine they would be around the same cost to rebuild. Anywhere from $2k on up. You might look at a replacement instead such as Jasper, Lenntech or Performance Automatic. They all usually have a 3 year 36k warranty, whereas a rebuild from and aamco, cottman, or mr. transmission only have a 6-12 month warranty.

Hope that helps

Hello,

JBRIII is correct on this. I did the same thing but in oil change shop. They have a vacuum line in there...

1. I would say - no. A couple of thoughts though… What's the mileage on the car? Maybe it's time to change the fluid in the tranny. If you go for draining (not flushing) the tranny and torque converter you'll have to install new filter and gasket and that'll possibly stop your leakage. And that's much less that re-build. Another point of possible leakage is the extension housing seal. It happens mostly (correct me if I'm wrong) from speeding. Search for *extension housing*to get more... Any ways, just clean up the tranny and you'll see the point of leakage… That cost me around $150 to fix… check that first.

2. Here in MI it'll be around $2300 You could save some money if you buy it (on eBay). Try to do search for *rebuild* you'll get a lot of info.

3. No clue
Alex.

Ok. Truck has a 4R70W tranny. Truck has 74K miles. I have no knowledge of the history of the fluid changes on this truck as I just bought it off a lot. It is leaking from the top passenger side of the tranny where it couples up to the engines flywheel.

I am going to drop it off at the local dealership on monday morning.

Could this thing be leaking cause it needs a fluid change?

Thanks

Brian

Well got the call from the shop. Not the tranny leaking. Head gasket on the right side is blown throwing some oil and coolant onto the tranny and exhaust. They want 1500$.

Think I should flush the tranny and transfer case since I dont know the history on this truck. 74k miles. Tranny shift smooth as silk

Thanks for all your help.
