Unhappy Transmission Harsh Shifting

Hi Ford Guys
Got a question about a transmission problem. I have a 1999 F150,
with a 4R70W transmission. My Mileage is 32,700. Around 29,000 miles I noticed when I am stopping, the trans like down shifts rather harsh instead of smooth. When accelerating, the trans seems to slip, and then you feel like you just went over a speed bump or you got hit in the rear when it catches. I first had the fluid changed at ford. That didn't help. Then a ford trans mechanic opened up the trans and only found a broken spring. That didn't help. I took it to another ford dealer and they said to replace the Transmission, that the problem was too small to find upon opening up the Trans again. This happens when it's cold or hot.
Ford Said it's out of Warranty. I am waiting to speak to a factory rep. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

4X4 5.4 engine

Thanks JW

Doing a rebuild yourself may not be what you're looking for. Apparently the Ford tranny service manual is around $80. User "bjherron" from www.fordf150.net forums said he did his first rebuild of a 4R70W in 3hrs (after pulling it from his vehicle).

Here's some good reading:

You may find the answer to your problems in those articles and you can always email the author.

Also, I'm not a transmission tech, but I rebuild a 4R70W in about 3 hours my first time. You can buy two manuals from haynes for about $80, and it's a step-by-step deal. Total parts cost was about $320 too. Just food for thought

Harsh Shifting

Thanks for the Info p_ferlow. I don't plan to rebuild my own transmission, but I did take a look at the articles. Since I posted this tread, I took my truck to another dealer, and went for a ride with the shop foreman. I really couldn't get the tranny to act exactly the way it has been acting. You know the saying about a watched pot never boils, will that's the way it went. He said everything it was doing was normal. I disagree to some extent.
It never acted like this before. It feels sometimes like it slips, then bangs into gear up shifting. Other times it feels like you ran over a speed bump. He told me when it gets worse to come back and he would check it again. If he finds something wrong then he will try and get most of it covered under a PO5or7 since it only has 33,000 miles. We will see I guess.

Thanks again

I now have some scanned pdf's of the rebuild manual, that could be used for download. It's really an easy transmission to rebuild.

Hey Brian,
I was going to order one of those ATSG (spelling?) manuals off ebay. Have you got those pdf's on a site for downloading somewhere?

Thanks,
Peter
