Question towing with bumper

I've never towed anything before, but would like to get a small pop-up camper. Can I tow with just a ball on the bumper or do I need to get a hitch? I'll probably only pull it 3-4 times a year for about 1-2 hours.

i,ve got a 97....

w/4.6 and i hauled my daughters tracker on a full size ryder car trailer with just the bumper hitch and had no problems after a 500 mile haul. i would think a pop up camper would be about the same wieght. like mentioned before...cross referance your tounge wieghts and you,ll be able to make a sound decision. tip:when you put on the hitch ball use a tourge wrench to tighten the ball manufactuers specs ,dont just use a breaker bar because you can overtighten and crack the bolt and you,d hate to look like that dodge commercial
