Do I ned a transmission cooler to do some lightweight towing.
I have a 2000 4X4 F-150XLT. I'll be towing a waverunner to and from the beach or lake (less than 3 hours away).

You will prolly be OK... I suspect that the whole rig is well under the 2,000 lb limit for a no tow package truck.
Having said that... if you are going to tow much, a transmission cooler is the single most important piece of equipment you can buy to extend transmission life. Heat kills the oil which will kill the transmission.
You will generate more heat when you tow. You should check the tranny oil color before and after your first tow to see if it has changed. If it has moved from reddish to brownish you got a temperature buildup.

You should have a tranny cooler even if you don't tow anything IMO.......
At any rate, you "should" have one from the factory. Check inside the bumper area and you should see two coolers down low. The one on the driver side is the power steering cooler. The one on the passenger side is the tranny cooler.
