Just a recent real world experience:
2004 4x4 4.6L with 3.55 gear: towed 3500 pound trailer, set cruise to 72mph, couldn't maitain speed on interstate hills without going to 2nd gear at about 4200rpm, and even then would loose speed on many hills in the "flat" midwest. Sorry, the 4.6L in a truck that weighs 5100 pounds empty is just not enough hp for safe trailering. I'm trading in for the 5.4L tomorrow.

 

kylake - what size tires do you have on you 4x4?

 

tires are 255x70x17, gears are 3.55.

 

traded in for 06 with 5.4L. Nice truck! I'll post a towing comparison when I get a chance.

Until last Monday, I have been towing a Jayco 26' trailer with a slide. It had double axel tanden wheels, a leveling device at the hitch with a sway bar. Until I got a SI/DO exhaust system and an air intake system I had plenty of trouble maintaining my speed going over 10,000 ft. plus highway peaks in Colorado. Kept my unit in Buena Vista, CO which is just below the Collegiate Peaks (they are all 14,000 + ft). Needless to say, last Monday I picked up my Jayco and brought it back to Denver thru these mountains and really had no problems maintaining my speed because of my modifications.

BUT, the reason for my travel was because I got an Airstream 19 footer which will be much easier on my vehicle and will allow me to travel much more. With a 5.4 and a 26 ft. trailer, my foot was in it at all times. Will pick the new trailer up on Tuesday.

Good luck on your choice of trailers. But be sure to get the levelers and sway bar, they make a difference.

I took the towing weights from my '94 manual and put them in a table.

Not everyone here is towing with a *new* truck.

lol. To me, "new" means it is legally required to have seat belts.

My '94 just bit the dust. I hit a deer. The front right grille, quarter panel and radiator etc all gone. I'd fix it but the @#$@#$ airbag went off (dang thing almost broke my thumb). A new airbag (as required by law) is $3 grand, so the truck is worthless.

I know I know, off topic.... Anyone know what year airbags became required equipment?

Just got a new 07' Lariat, 5.4L, 3.55 Axle, and 7200# package. I'm thinking of purchasing a Rockwood 8317SS or the 8298SS (dry weight 5921 lbs). Do you think the truck is adequate for pulling/stopping etc? I'm planning using a Trunnion WD with a Tekonshi P3 proportional brake controller.

You will be able to tow that no problem, but you will be wishing you had 4.10 gears.

 

Familyf150, Just keep the OD off and you will be more than fine. Watch out for big hills.

 

I'm about to buy a friends '98 4x4 4.6L. He's done a lot of great work on it, and it's now sitting on 35"s with a 4.56:1. Looks like from the tables posted, stock with the H9 it was ok to pull 6300#. I don't ever want to try and pull *more* than this, but will the modded truck still be capable at ~6000# with the bigger tires but better torque?

I mostly play in the dirt, with only a light load in the bed - but occasionally (about once a year) I do a long hard 1000mi pull with a 5000#er. Opinions?
