Hi! I am am new to the forum. I have a 1999 F-150 Supercab 4x2 Sport 5.4 with a chip Flowmaster split dual exhaust and a K&N FIPK. I have 48,000 miles and have been towing a 20 foot enclosed race trailer with a 2500 lb Shelby 427 Cobra since I got the truck in 1999. I have the 17 inch wheels that came with the Goodyear GT2 high performance tires and the 3.55 limited slip rear. In never had a problem towing and drive the truck as an everyday vehicle. I just love it. I even ran the 1/4 mile in it just for fun. It ran 15.6 at 89mph. I was impressed.
***Here's the question/problem. I sold the Cobra and bought a Winston Cup car which will at about another 900lbs to the load and I was thinking of going to a 24 foot trailer instead of a 20 foot trailer. Will the F-150 be okay with the weight? Should I go with the 5th wheel method? Everyone seems to tell me to go Dually or at least Super Duty but I really don't wan't to drive something that cumbersome on a daily basis. The F-150 is like a car.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I would like to know if any of you have an acceptable use of oil by the 5.4. I usually have to add 1/2 quart per 1000 miles.

 

Cant have a car and a truck too. I really think a 24' trailer with that kind of weight is a lot for your setup. Honestly I wouldnt pull the 20', but definately wouldnt suggest adding to your load. Not only are you talking about more trailer, whats the extra space gonna be for? Probably more weight in tools etc. A fifth wheel would pull better though.

I guess there is are no modifications I can make to tow better with the 150. How about If I stay in the 20ft range an go to a goosneck and stay between 8 & 9,000 lbs.?

Remember your GCWR is only in the #13,000 range. To be able to tow #9000, your truck could only weigh #4000 and that would have to include the tongue weight of whatever you are towing.....

The truck could physically move it, but do you really want something that is twice your trucks weight strapped to your butt??

The F150 is a decent tow vehicle, just have to keep within it's limits....

Well, you would have to do some mods to your truck.

Shift kit (very good to have for towing)
Transmission fluid auxilary cooler
Possibly better brakes if you dont already have decent brakes.
A chip wouldnt hurt....
A very good tow hitch! They bolt to the frame, but if i were towing that kind of load, id weld it too just for a bit more strength.

That's very cool. Looks like a lot of fun. I enjoy racing of all sorts, but the vintage racing has always intrigued me.

 

Can anyone explain why the Lightening can tow less than the regular 150?

 

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
In the case of the Lightning it isn't the horsepower or the torque.
I believe it is the suspension.
When you raise max towing rate, you must be willing to also increase the max tongue rate.
Max Towing for a XLT Reg cab Flareside is 8800
Max Towing for a Lightning is 5000

Even more telling is payload.
Max payload for a XLT Reg cab Flareside is 2045
Max payload for a Lightning is 800
(that is eight hundred pounds, not a typo)
Max payload for a Honda Civic is 815

 

Shhhhh..........Don't anyone tell Raoul what I've been towing with a Lightning!!!!
