That depends on ther trailer. For my Expy and my boat trailer, I used a 3/4" drop 2" rise which is a straight shaft.

You'd want the trailer to be level. I would think a 4x4 would end up with a 2" or 3" drop but again, it depends on the trailer.

Thanks for the response Familyride. I an going to be renting an auto transport trailer to move an antique car to shows this summer. I guess I will have to do some homework befor then. Any advice on brake boosters if you use them? Thanks again.

Sorry, my boat trailer has surge brakes so I'm pretty brake illiterate.

You want to use a drop so that the frame of the trailer is parallel with the ground or with the tongue slightly below parallel when everything is fully loaded. I pull a couple of different trailers and I use a 4" drop. My enclosed trailer has 15" wheels and my boat has 13" wheels. The suspension on the boat trailer is 'sprung' enough to make up the difference in the wheel height so both trailers 'fit' fine behind my truck with the same ball mount. I basically got lucky so I didn't need to have 2 different drops.

You might want to check out Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops and see if they have a ball mount with an adjustable drop. I'm not sure if they make a class IV but I know there is a class III adjustable drop mount available. That will help you eliminate any of the guess-work and trial and error BS.

I use a Reese electronic brake controller and it works good for me...

I wish I had spent a little more an got an adjustable drop.
Anything would be a level tow.
Over the years it would pay off.

Yeah, Raoul, I agree. I just got lucky with mine but I should have spent the extra $10 and got the adjustable drop mount since who knows what I'll be towing in the future.
