Are fancy brake controllers worth it?

I am about to have one installed and the dealer insists that I'd be better off with a regular manual one. I like the idea of having voltage readout, kind of keeps an eye on the circuit continuity. You can tell if all connections are made good.

Looks like the Prodigy is a good one. What do you think?

I have two Ford trucks equipped with electric brake controllers, that pull two large trailers. My truck is a 2000 F-250 SD XLT Ext Cab 4x4 V-10. My wifes is a 99 F-150 XLT Lariat 2wd 4.6L. We have a 26 ft TT weighing in around 6000 to 7000 lbs. I also have a 16 ft. tandem axle equipment trailer weighting 1500 lbs empty. The brake controller in my wifes truck is the manual type with no readouts displays etc. The controller in my truck is a Draw Tite Activator II that has the digital read out. I prefer my digital controller because you can actually see the amount of braking you have set in. On the wifes truck you are just guesssing. Also using the electronic read out controller I know how much Intensity to set for a given weight. For example with my equipment trailer with a 4000 lb tractor on it I want a Intensity of "4" with a Synch of "5" I keep a log of the settings for a given weight. This makes it easy when I hook up the TT because I set the controller before even leaving the drive way. My .02 worth is get the controller with the electronic read out. I think you may pay $15 or $20 more for it, but it's well worth the money. I think I paid around $65 for my Draw Tite unit at a local trailer store.

Happy Trails !!!

I had a 97 step side with a six. with a manual cont. it had a color
code you had to set. I now have a 2001 F-150 super cab 5,4/355
with a electric control with a number read out. I pull a 26 foot
sunney brook travel trailer, about 4600 loaded. Love the breaks.
It starts to slow the trailer down even when you take your foot of the gas. You will be very pleased with this type.

Exclamation well worth the $$$

I currently have a F150 SuperCrew and I pull a 7800# travel trailer and I use the Tekonsha Prodigy Electronic Trailer Brake Unit. I have had manual break units in the past and didn't know how much better the others were, (until now)....

I would save money else were.

PS. ALWAYS USE A BREAK CONTROLLER OF SOME KIND WHEN TOWNING!!! Take this from someone who could have avoided a bad accident if only I had electric breaks...
