Towing in Overdrive
I have searched this site for the answer about towing in overdrive, yes or no, and MOST responses say it is alright to tow in OD. Now for the question I need answered. My tranny doesn't hunt between 3rd and 4th but the torque convertor constantly unlocks and locks. What kind of damage is this doing to my tranny? When this starts to happen I turn off the OD, but it happens on any slight incline. I find myself out of OD a lot. Is this going to fry my tranny's TC.
Hi FB
Know what you mean. I noticed that tranny shifting alot when i first got my 99SC.
Took me awhile to get used to how it shifted, coming from 5sp in old truck.
Anyhow...like Dennis said...i do same...when coming to a hill i click out of OD...into 3rd....also going down hill...i leave in 3rd if a steep hill.
When towing i leave it in 3rd some of the time...on long, no hills.hiway..i use OD.
No, its not good to have that tranny shifting alot between OD & 3 or? So...leave it in lower gear if that happens...
I read sometime ago a post by Ford engineer...about these auto. trannys they use....along with the pcm...electroncis in tranny adaptive stragedy etc...
Dont recall exact wording...but its like having a gear between 3rd & OD..mulitplication factor with the torque. converter. unlocks and locks...the tranny shifts into this mode before going into 3rd..unless you really stomp on it.
Maybe someone here could be more clear on this.
Shifting alot between OD & 3rd etc...does cause heating etc...so best to shift down and stay there...now im not really sure what wear..tear if any, when tranny goes into mode between OD & 3.
Does this sound like what your experiencing? Maybe someone here can explain better..im not a tech. guru.
Good luck....OT

Towing In Overdrive
The truck hardly ever shifts from overdrive down to 3rd, but the torque convertor will lock/unlock quite often while I'm in OD. That is what my real concern is, the wear and tear on the Torque Convertor. Over time I have learned when to take it out of overdrive for hills etc...
