Question Hooking up controller-no power

I hooked up my new Tekonsha Voyager yesterday. Easy four wire hook-up. Plugged in the two included relays, mounted it and fired it up. No power. No light whatsoever! Only thing I did different was put an inline 25A fuse with the wire marked trailer brakes for a little extra safety. Is there something I could have missed?

Something here doesn't quite add up. A four wire, flat connection has no trailer brake wire in it. You must use the round 7 pin connector. And, I do not believe you will have power to the brake wire on the 7 pin connector until you add an electric brake controller to the plug under the dash.

Beastrider,

I think he is refering to the brake controller having an easy 4 wire hookup as opposed to 4 wires at the back.

SCOOBY14B,
All I did with mine was hook up the controller, put in the relays and drive away.

You may have to troubleshoot this. You can take the wire that is the output of the controller and connect it to 12V and check if have a signal at the back. etc etc. Did you test with a meter or your trailer? Could you have a ground problem? Is your controller grounded properly?

Relays Missing?

Your problem may be that the relays are missing. I didn't get mine in the baggy with the truck, so I assumed the dealer had put them in for me. Of course, the dealer had just lost the bag. I went and demanded my relays and popped them in and everything worked.

Are you talking about when you depress the brake?
Some controllers need to be connected to a trailer. My Dad had a Tekonsha (couldn't tell you the model) and his worked that way.

Yes. Trailer (with electric brakes / 7-pin connector) needs to be connected for the controller light to illuminate.

ok...this is my first experience with wiring a brake controller. Will the green light not light up unless the trailer is hooked up? Had the exact same controller on one of our fire engines to tow a heavy duty trailer and the green light lit up even when the trailer wasnt hooked up.

I hava a Tekonsha controller and the only time the LED is on is when the trailer is plugged in. Green = plugged in,red = brakes on. When you plug it in the circuit is closed through the electromagnets. (green LED) I learned that part the hard way when a magnet went bad and I lost all my brakes on the camper. To test it either plug into the trailer or put a jumper wire into the plug for the brake circuit. If the green LED is on with nothing plugged in there is a short in the brake circuit.

I have the Tekonsha Sentinel so I'm not sure if the Voyager is set up the exactly same. I have a leveling light on the right side of the controller and power lights on the left side. The leveling light comes on whenever brakes are applied with or without a trailer connection. The progressive power lights on the left side of the controller measure how much braking is being sent to the trailer and don't come on till the trailer is hooked up. When I plug in the trailer I get a green light and then when braking is done I get progressive red lights. When no trailer is hooked up there are no lights other than my leveling indicator.
Hope this will be of some help,
Ron

I see from your post that your truck was built 5-14-2001.

As I recall my truck was built on the same date...

hmmm small world

Mine too

Yep, my Tekonsha too. Trailer has to be plugged in before it lights up...

Relays?

Ian N... What relays are you referring to? Are there relays that come with the Brake Controller? If there are, then I'm going to wring the neck of the guy that sold me my brake controller.

Or are you talking about the two Relays next to the Engine Fuse Panel in an F-150,250, etc.? i.e. - Ford Relays for Towing?

Thanks guys.
