gooseneck and fifth wheel hitches
gooseneck and fifth wheel hitches
Okay so I am suppose to be pulling a gooseneck here shortly, and I was looking at just getting an underbed goosneck hitch, however I like the idea of having the rails because then I can do a gooseneck (I've seen it somewhere) or a fifth wheel. Do you guys have any recomendations as far as who makes a good one and where is a cheap place to find one? I have searched on etrailer.com but I can't seem to find the gooseneck that will attach to the same rails a fifth wheel would. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
By far the best gooseneck hitch is a B&W turn over ball.. You can get a removable 5th wheel hitch that drops in where the ball normally goes. It's called the Companion. B&W GN hitches are rated at 30k and the 5th wheel conversion "Companion" is rated at 16k.
As far as 5th wheel rails that convert to GN you will usually limit yourself to 16-18k in a GN. For many 16k is enough but for many ranchers they occasionally haul a dual tandem to haul hay which have a 20k GVWR making the conversion a no go.
You will need to determine which rails you want before buying a GN ball conversion. Some rails go front to back while others go side to side. Other rails are for sliders and are not usually capable of conversion.
I have seen/used/installed Hi-Jacker, Husky and Draw-Tite conversions.
A different product I also like is the Ranch Hitch & Convert-a-ball Adapter. Basicly it converts a 5th wheel trailer to a gooseneck ball. This is usually less $$ than a truck hitch conversion. The only down side is if you have multiple 5th wheel trailers they can be a bit of a pain to install and remove.

I prefer the B & W as far as goosenecks go (lowers the pin height, and free bed when not used), but we have put a Reese rail system in just because the old man and I need to be able to move or tow his 5th wheel camper at times. We use the offset gooseneck plate. Works great, just sits a couple inches higher than and under the bed setup, will require some adjustments on the trailer to still sit level. As far as goose/5th towing with an f150? as long as you do it right there is no problem. Took over 20 years of sometimes heavy loaded cattle towing and driving in MN its whole life to create any problems with my old '91 F150. As for 'not recommended'? They have pictures of the truck doing it in ads, and they use to offer 'overloads' for them from the factory/dealer installed. If you want to pull both, grumble over the rails catching stuff time to time and get a set of reese rails.
Thank you
Thank you for all your help, I finally went with the rails and the gooseneck plate, overall more cost effective for me since I can just remove the goosneck plate and put in the fifth wheel hitch. I'm actually very pleased with the rails and all.
