Question about Brake Controllers

I know there are 10 threads on the first page about brake controllers but I believe this one is different. I just bought an '08 with the factory tow package (tranny cooler/7pin + 4pin hookups/hitch). I don't have a brake controller installed because the only trailers I tow regularly are my Pop-up camper and utility trailer that don't have brakes. Being that I don't have a brake controller, if I hook up to a trailer that has electric brakes will they not engage at all or will they fully engage when I hit the brakes every time?

Thanks,

They will not work at all. You must have a controller.

I see that most here are using a prodigy, is there a certain model number?

Most recommended is the P3.

We sell about a case (25) P2 Prodigy for every P3 that gets sold.
The P3 does everything the P2 does with the additional stuff:
-Capable of controlling an electric over hydraulic brakes
-Error codes in plain English in stead of a code you need to look up
-Display color is changeable

Most people don't need a P3. A P2 is sufficient.
Some people just have the have the best, even if it has things they will never use.

The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 is still the #1 selling controller in the country; followed closely by the Draw-Tite Activator II which is a timer based controller (major step down.)

Ok about to order a prodigy P2, $85 new on e bay, I have the tow package on my 05 F150 and the wiring harness and relay that came with the truck. I don't need to order another harness do I?

The harness that comes with the Prodigy will come with connectors to attach to your factory supplied harness. It will involve attaching 4 wires that are NOT color matching. If you opt for application specific Prodigy harness for your year Ford there will be no splicing or connecting required... just plug and play.
