Towing question

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Have an '04 XLT SC with 5.4 and 4x4. Has a factory hitch that is rated at 5000lbs. Can this hitch safely handle more than that? Gonna need to trailer a car down to Florida from IN. I estimate the combined weight of the vehicle being trailered +trailer to be around 6600-6700lbs. Do I need to upgrade to a class IV hitch or will my factory one handle it? If I need to upgrade, who has the best prices on a class IV hitch for my truck? Thanks.

Hitch would handle it, but GVW of truck and trailer exceeds limits of truck. I dont know laws states but I know up here north of the 49th. If caught would get a hefty fine, or worse if in accident. Max GVW combined is 9800lbs, depending on axle type.

Your hitch should have 2 ratings for it. The #5000 rating is for just plopping the trailer on it and going. The other will be up to #10000 if you use a Weight Distribution hitch setup. That's where you have the spring bars that attach to the hitch and the trailers A frame.

They do make hitches that will handle more weight when you just plop a trailer on it, but once you are up to that weight range, you'd want a WD setup anyway.. The WD will also help level out the rig.
