What is this trailer's empty weight?

I am looking into buying a horse trailer and was told that the "empty" weight is 5080lbs. For a 2 horse trailer it seems too heavy.

This is a 1992 Featherlite 9405. The vin plate lists the front and rear axle capacity as 5080, gvwr @ 7000, ER Axle rating 3500. The only other place that 5080 is listed is under the 9405(model) and has nothing referring to what that number means. Does anyone know what this trailer might weigh? I don't have access to a scale for it.

Not sure exactly, only thing I found stated it weighed about 1800lbs empty. 5080 is too high for an empty 2 horse trailer. My bet is the 5080 is the payload with 7000lbs being max weight. That would confirm the 1800lb empty weight. Also the 3500lbs per axle weight.

per Featherlite ship weight on a 9405 is 1800#'s but they also lists it with 2- 2200# axles which could make a 5080 GVWR

Here's link to Featherlite's specs:

I see the new model is pretty light, but I have a hard time believing the '92 model is close to that. This one has mangers and saddle racks, and is less of an open design. Here is a link with a photo of the trailer and the vin plate.

Thanks for all the info so far!

5080# is each axle's GAWR.

You don't have a truck stop or a lumber yard anywhere near you? It shouldn't be THAT hard to find a scale.

Something just isn't right. That is a 5 lug axle which makes it a 3500lb axle or less for a max GVWR of 7k. I wonder if somebody has switched out the axles or if the VIN tag is incorrect as far as axle capacities.

Featherlite does some queer stuff though. They have the axles built for them and are supposedly only available through Featherlite. I have the build specs and can get Dexter to build me Featherlite axles as they build them for Featherlite.

To put this dispute to bed you can call Universal Trailer Sales (Featherlite) and talk to Notie. She can tell you by the VIN what was installed by Featherlite. Additionally you can call Dexter and get the axle tag number from the axle and ask them what the rating is from their build serial number (it's on the center of the axle)
