Question '97 XL 4.2 V6 MANUAL

I know the engine is weak. I'm in the military and will be traveling from Norfolk Va. to Seattle Wa. about 3000 mi. I plan on towing with a tow dolly a '95 ford probe. We will be going over some pretty high mountains, and I was thinking about unhooking and driving the car when we reach them to save wear on the engine and clutch. Is this a good idea? any other suggestions or comments?

I don't see why you should need to de-couple the car. Just downshift and maintain your rpm's so that you don't lug the engine.
