A stupid Brake Controller question

Bought my first trailer with brakes and got a Prodigy P2. I keep getting SH flashing on it. It is connected correctly, Ford harness and plug and play and all that. It said that it was a ground problem with the blue wire. So I was wondering if the battery for the trailer needs to be connected for the ground to be completed. I unhooked the battery wires as not to drain it dead while it was sitting in the yard. So if I connect the trailer battery will that complete the ground and the light will stop flashing? By the way the brakes work fine, i calibrated them like Prodigy says to do and everything works great, but the "SH" flashes all the time unless the brake pedal is pressed. Any ideas or answers? Thanks

In with your paperwork you got a cheat sheet your supposed to keep in the tow vehicle. It tells you what error cosed mean. The Prodigy is a great controller and has a bunch of on board diagnostics. The upgrade to the Prodighy, the P3 gives these in plain english instead of a code.

It sounds like the controller is installed correctly.

SH- stands for Short... or and electrical short.
Most times when I see this the electric brake magnets are worn out and the magnet (usually insulated) has wire from the windings touching the inside of the brake drum. It could also be a broken brake feed wire touching the trailer frame causing a dirrect short. Usually when that happeds you will get a OL code though.

Other Prodigy Error Codes:
NC- Trailer is disconnected
OG- Lost Ground
OL- Over Load (electrical)
PL- Power Loss in controller while braking
