Trailer Flooring

My new trailer floor is wood and will be un-treated from the factory. I'm thinking about painting the floor with Herculiner to protect the floor. Do you guys think this is a good idea?

Personally, I think it's a great idea, but you're not going to get many that agree with me. If you do some sanding to give the Herculiner something to adhere to first, you should be fine. It will not be as slippery as the wood would normally be, especially if wet.

Good luck

Why don't you try this? http://www.minwax.com/products/oil_b..._urethane.html

It may be a little slick when wet, but it will look natural. You could always add some skid guard in the areas that you would be walking when loading the ATV's. http://www.surefootcorp.com/

If all you are trying to do is protect the untreated wood any deck stain will work. If you do it every year on an exposed deck trailer your floor should last about 20 years.

On an enclosed trailer we use an oil based paint to seal the interior floor and about 1' up the side wall. It seams to last and a 20' enclosed trailer will cost under $30 to paint.(1-2 gallons)

I've seen enclosed snowmobile trailers sprayed with Rhino or Linex that look really pretty when done in a color match (usually white or tan). But waaay expensive $$$$.

The Herculiner should give you about the same results, but not as durable. The prep involved would steer me away to a simpler process.

Oil Based Paint- Rust-Oleum, any color (pick it up antwhere paint is sold)
Oil based stain- Olympic, Behr, Minwax, Cabot, Ze-Vo

Brand really isn't important.
In fact our favorite (Cheap- I belive it is made by Valspar) is from Big R farm supply store and is an Industrial Tractor paint available in black, white, safety yellow, safety red and all the popular tractor colors like International White (Tan), Ford Grey and John Deere Green.
It seems to work and last as long as the Rust-Oleum at about 1/2 the price.

The main thing with the stain is making sure it is oil based to protect the wood.

So let me make sure that I have this correct b/c I'm a true newb when it comes to trailers.

Are you saying to paint it using an oil based paint Rust-Oleum first, then let it dry then add an Oil based Stain.

If possible can you shoot me a few links. I'm more of a visual person. Thanks

What about Thompson's Water Seal - the same stuff you use on your house deck?

My brother in law did his garage floor with this stuff:

I like those but I feel like if water seeps through them I'm still in the same boat of damaging the untreated wood. I would rather treat the wood some how first and then either leave it that way or install the motofloor or something similar on top.

I gave the company a call and the don't recommend it. They say that they don't think it will hold up to the weight of the motorcycles (what ever that means)

I called them too and the guy I spoke with was nasty. He just keep saying that Thompson products are for the exterior and not and enclosed trailer. With so many ppl out of work you would think that more ppl would be happy just to have a job
