Not sure if this has been done before????

looking to place a set of utility fogs on the back of my landscape trailer, found a great spot to mount them, but have no idea how to get power to them. i have a spot for the switch in the truck, but can't figure out how to run wiring to trailer without haveing to add a second plug. trailer runs on 4 flat style plug. truck has 7 round (i bought a plug in adapter)

thanks for any ideas
Kevin

One option you have is to upgrade the plug on your trailer to a round 7 to match the truck. On the round 7 their is a dedicated hot wire, you have the option of running this wire to a power distribution block and from their you can run power to the lights on the trailer. I would put the switch for the lights in between the trailers plug and power distribution block, It is simpler to make the connections and run the wiring in this location, and in general you would be uing the lights when your outside of the truck loading, unloading, working, etc.

Something else to think about is another addition i did to some of my trailers, I mounted some lights on the back of the trailers to use as reverse lights. On the round 7 their is a sorce for back up lights that may be used for this.

Hope this helps you. Robbie

Switching to a 7 pin trailer plug is you best option. Putting a switch in the aux charge wire is the best choice. Of course if you need the lighting for reverse the reverse light wire is by far even a better choice.

Looking at a 7 pin trailer connector on the truck the 1 o'clock position is the aux charge line and the center pin is the reverse lights.

ok so if i wire the reverse lights to the center pin 7 round they will go on automatically when in reverse?? or do i still need the switch??? can i put 2 55W lights on this wire or is that asking a little much from it. i found the need to add back up lights to my trailer after trying to back it into my drive way after work one night and almost smacking mom's explorer (it's a long narrow driveway with absolutly no light, i usually ride the brakes so the brake lights will light it up a little which probably isn't good)

You can run them right off of your reverse light wire from the trailer plug and it will work for you.

Their is a way to get a little more fancy if you want, the light would come on automaticly with the reverse lights and their would be a switch to turn them on when activated as well. To explain how to wire this takes a little more time to type than I have right now, but if this is how you want to wire it let me know and il post it for you.

Yes one 14g wire will handle 2 55w lights for your application.

Hope this helps. Robbie

I agree with this statement.... but the truck wiring for the reverse lights is smaller than 14ga.... closer to 18-20ga
I believe that the reverse light truck and trailer feed (brown w/ green trace) is a 5amp fused.

To run 2-55watt halogen lights I would use the reverse light wire to power a relay and use the aux charge line (30amp) to do the actual power supply for the lights. This could easily be mounted on the tongue of the trailer.
Some might call this overkill......:o

yeah i saw your fogs a while ago and added a set to my truck, but then found out that they only let me see the front of the trailer and not what is behind it. but they are nice when i am not using the trailer!!
