Smile Coachmen 5th Wheel on F150 Supercab 4x4

I am thinking of buying a new coachmen 5th wheel 267RLS

http://fifth-wheel.rvweb.com/new_Coachmen_specs.php

and towing it about 1000 miles every six months.

I have the towing package on my truck and the ability to tow 9300lbs. but I see on the Ford page that I cannot tow a 5th

https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/...crp16Aug06.pdf

My salesman says it can tow it.

Help! I am confused... thanks Jodi

Salesmen will tell you anything to sell that trailer. You are in Super Duty territory with that 5th wheel. The pin weight plus the weight of the hitch will likely put you over the payload rating of the bed, not to mention exceeding the GVWR and maybe even the GCWR. I tow a 26 ft. 6,500 lb. travel trailer and I would not want to go much beyond that. A good rule of thumb for tow ratings is the 75% rule: if you regularly tow at 75% or more of your truck's tow rating, you should consider a heavier truck. When selecting a travel trailer to tow, always err on the side of safety. Check out the forums at www.rv.net for more information about towing and RVs.

Agreed, I've been looking into TT's as well and it's true, those sales guys will tell you can pull a 40' trailer with a ranger if that's what you want. Try to stick around 6000 lbs. and you'll be in good shape. Keep in mind that while your rig may be capable of towing 9300, but it's going to be sucking wind and not going to make for a fun experience.

Cool This trailer is supposed to be made for light trucks

Hello again,
Thank you for the replies about the 5th wheel. I do appreciate your thoughts.
I find it hard to believe that salesmen really would mislead a person about what their truck is able to tow safely. I could not sleep at night if I put someone in a potentially unsafe situation or sold them something that that I knew would cause problems. Especially if they spent over $20000.00 on it.

I was wondering if anyone has attempted this feat in the past and what the results were.
Thanks again for the advice and taking the time to reply to my question.

It looks like you're just looking for someone to say it's ok. It's your decision and yours only. However, there is a wealth of knowledge on this list and the people that post here usually know what they're talking about.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam. https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=263932

I agree that the happy weight limit is in the 6000-6500 lb range, but as anyone here will tell you, overall weight is not the limiting factor. There are a number of weight ratings, none of which should be exceeded. Keep in mind that even though you don't plan on towing it too often, you still have to share the road with others and you don't want to be "That Person."
