Question 4.6 Screw towing?

Hey, I'm looking for "real world" experience with towing a travel trailer with an '01 Screw 4X4 with the 4.6. Yeah, I know I should have the 5.4

FYI, numbers are: GVWR 6500, GCWR 11500, Max towing 6300, truck weighs 5000

I'm looking at towing about a 5000 pound (loaded) trailer (axle weight) with 700 pound hitch weight. Two passengers and a dog in truck and normal camping junk in trailer and truck.

Anyone pulled this much with this rig? FYI, I'm in Georgia with mild hills and flat-lands, only occasional North Georgia mountain trip.

Thanx, Lance

You'll do fine, but won't be winning any speed races. Tow smart, use a brake controller, etc.

I have a 2wd 4.6 running 35in. tires geared 4.10 and I pull 4,000lbs 280miles every weekend. Been a year with this combo I have had no problems.
On up hills it sure feels like a dog but still manage to hit 45mph on steep hills. Straightaways this truck cruises at 75mphs easy.

As long as you have the towing package you should be fine.

Question

I had towing gear added by aftermarket shop in 2001; just a class 4 receiver hitch and lights setup.

What was included on factory towing package in '01? Tranny cooler, hitch, lights?

Lance

Most towing ive done was towing a 2dr grand prix on a car dolly across town. I used a bumper mounted ball, with no problems... Went easy with her, since it was my first time towing

I would strongly suggest installing an auxiliary transmission oil cooler, or your 4r70w might not be long for this world pulling that load.
