Is anyone pulling a horse trailer w/F150???

I have been looking for a f250 crew 5.4 w/ TS tranny but there are a very limited number for 07. I think they are putting all production to the new 08 SD. I will be pulling a 2 horse trailer 6k max. 2-3 weekends a month. I have a 98 f150 w4.6 and towing performance is lacking and not safe for live cargo. Is a f150 with 5.4 auto and 3.73 going to be safe ??? The specs say up to 9200# w/ 7200 gvwr. but i learned the hard way with the 98 it can barley tow itself loaded. Jerry

Well, seeing as I towed a three horse slant loaded w/ 6800 lbs from Mississippi to Alaska with no probs (other than bad fuel economy) with a 98 f150 s/cab, 4x4, 4.6, 3.55 gears, I dont think you should have a problem.

It sounds like we have the same truck! I did pull a 27 ft travel trailer a few times with it but it blew the rear end gota love that 8.8. I hope they use at least a 9.75 in the new ones. jerry

6,000lbs is about the max you'd want to tow with ANY halfton pickup. What is it about your truck that is lacking? The power? Look into a intake, exhaust, and tune. Suspension? Look into helper springs or air ride.
Also, if you do happen to get a F-250/350, don't get it with the 5.4. It'll be just like your 4.6 power wise.

I agree with Zaair... 6,000 will be towards the "upper end" that anyone would want to tow with a half ton.

But with a newer F-150, 5.4, tow package, higher ratio rear end, etc. you should be OK with the 6,800.

Since you're not planning to tow very often, you can save a lot of money by using what you already have, and being a little slow.

I towed 6k at 70 mph with a v-6 dodge dakota. Dont start telling me that your 4.6 will not pull it safely. I am towing 2 lifted trucks on a commercial trailer with 3 adults this weekend(2006, scab, 3.55, 4.6, 4x4, auto). I expect the passenger, trailer and cargo weight to be around 8k and I will be driving for 5 hours. I will let ya know how it goes. Take it out of overdrive and put the hammer down!

Care to explain your math??

I dont care what you are towing it with, but unless Im missing something, you are severely underestimating.

TWO trucks, on a commericial trailer, with 3 adults??

You should be looking at 12k+ at least.

The 2 "trucks" are offroad only toys that started life as suzuki samurais. Stock tipping the scales at around 2k ea. Now with lift, tires and bumpers I would expect them to tip the scales around 2400 each accounting for 4800k. Trailer around 2500 so we are up to 7300. I say give each adult 200 lbs so were up to 7900 and maybe 500lbs in cargo so really closer to about 8400 fully loaded. I know I threw ya off with the "trucks" comment, should have clarified

Right you are, I think of them almost as a 4 wheeler on steriods. Currently im building up an 87 cherokee, should be a little more capable on the trail and much more comftorable for the passengers
