how to guide for 7way towing plug
how to guide for 7way towing plug
i just installed a brake controller and a recevier hitch. i got the hitch off the web and the brake controller was lying around next to a well used 7way plug for the truck end. i need to know what each wire does. i know white is the ground, but i still have a black, yellow, green, light blue, dark blue and brown wire. if anybody has any pictures or diagrams or knows of a webpage that would help, please help. thank you

If you buy a new plug, the diagram will be on the box. If you already have a plug you could go copy the diagram of the box at the parts store. Then its just a matter of using a light tester to find out which wires are which (though the colors might all match up).
Looking at the 7 pin connector from the side you would plug in the trailer...
11 o'clock running lights
1 o'clock 12v +
3 o'clock right turn
5 o'clock electric trailer brakes
7 o'clock ground
9 o'clock left turn
center 12v 30 amp auxillery hot or reverse lights
On the truck the wire harness is labeled what wire does what unless someone removed the tags or shortened the wires by cutting them.
The big white is obviously ground
The big blue regardless of light or dark is trailer brakes
green is right turn
yellow is left turn
brown is running lights
Now i don't remember the aux. vs. the 12v hot
Use a test light or meter to determine those last ones if they are not marked. There will be extra wires there, not all are for the 7 pin connector. For example the reverse light wire is usually not used in the center pin. Most go with the auxillery power.
I hope this helped more than it confused...

thanks for the help. i have to go back and rewire it because when i hooked up my trailer the left turn signal did nothing and the right turned on the E flashers. but the brake lights work along with the trialer brakes so it was fine.
Yeah, I know exactly how you feel. The Reese 7-pin connector that I bought had brown and green backwards imprinted on the connector, and I forgot to double check it with the diagram above or the connector cover on the truck.

AAAHHHH!
Your turn signals and your brake lights are the same wire per side. Meaning Yellow is left turn and left brake....Green is right turn and right brake. If your turn signals don't work but the brake light do, it is still wired wrong too.
