Model year hitch compatibility
Can anyone confirm for me a list of compatible class III recievers that will fit my 1992 F150? The only towing I do is wwith a featherlite motorcycle trailer with my Road Glide and my G/F's Sportster on it. Total weight is probably around 1500 pounds. I know that this is well within the bumper tow limit but I'm not happy with the angle and I'm thinking a class III hitch would work better.
I've read on some sites that anything made for 1980-1996 F150's will be compatible but I want to confrim this before I head for the junkyard to try and find me one. (Yes I know I'm a cheap SOB).

You could use a tape measure on your frame where the hitch holes are or maybe use a piece of cardboard cut to the width of the frame with hole alignment punched out.
It's probably is true that 1980 -1996 all fit because 1997-2003 fit.
Even though you say you're cheap, the junk yard isn't always the best deal. If they want more than $60 for the hitch I wouldn't buy.
An offbrand aftermarket hitch can be found for $80.
Why spend $20 more?
1) You ain't crawling around in the junkyard.
2) It ain't never been hit and slightly bent in a parking lot.
3) New hardware, a hitch aint no good if you see it tumbling down the highway in your rearview.
4) I would want the finest hitch available hauling a heavy load but, the cheapest hitch from Turdsmania can handle 1500 lbs.

We've got one of those Pull-A-Part junkyards here in town. All of their vehicles are bought for salvage and not wrecked. The best part is that they have fixed prices for everything. A hitch reciever goes for $21. I totally agree with using new mounting hardware. The local PAP has a ton of F150's made in the 1980's but nothing after 1991.

$21 is too good to pass up, even if it means some junkyard labor and new hardware.
I think you are getting good info on the 1996-1980 date range.
Reese lists the same hitch part number for the 1996 and 1980 F150.
The same is true for Drawtite.
This would lead me to believe that the holes line up frame through those years.

I found a DrawTite on a '90 F250 in the Pull-A-Part junkyard. Got it for $21. While I was taking it off I discovered that one of the tangs that mounts to the frame had broken. (before I found it). Turns out DrawTite has a lifetime warranty and they replaced it with a brand new one for me today free of charge. Brand new for $21....hard to top that!

Draw Tites are good hitches. They are the only brand I've ever bought (my favorite welding/ trailer shop is a Weld Rite dealer), although my current truck had a UHaul hitch on it when I bought it.
I had a Draw Tite class 5 hitch on my 88 F150 that eventually got moved to my '78 F250 and pulled many many loads up to 20,000 lbs and more. It also saved my truck from frame damage when I got rear ended once.
