Question on hitches.

I have an old trailer that used to be a truck box, and was just wondering about some ball sizes. Since it is a small trailer, I am just towing it using a ball on my bumper, I do not have a hitch. Anyways, it says on the trailer that it is 1-7/8". But I tried using a 2" and it fits. So my question is, if a 2" ball works in there, would I want to go down to a 1-7/8"? I mean if the bigger one fits, wouldn't the smaller one be a bit too loose?

You have to hit the lock pin down a little hard, but as long as it goes down and locks I should be good right?

Sort of a dumb question, but what do you guys think I should use?

And keep in mind it is an old trailer, so it's not like it just came from the factory... and it is home-made.

If the coupler on the trailer says, 1 7/8 it is 1 7/8", not 2" If the coupler fits on a 2" ball it is incorrectly adjusted. There is a nut on the bottom that should be tightened down after installing in a 1 7/8 ball until it is tight with just a little play. It should spin on the ball, but have no up/down movement (play). It will pivot up/down...duh? Sorry. By placing a 1 7/8" on a 2" ball there is not enough contact with the hitch and it can come off under load. The only exception is a bull-dog style hitch, if it fits a 2" and is marked 1 7/8" then the hitch is really worn out and should be replaced. I'm not sure, but I think Bull dog never made a 1 7/8" though.

i hope this is clear....oh well...

Ya that is very clear, thank you.

So I will just go buy a 1-7/8 ball and then tighten the nut on the coupler until it is snug
