Towing Test for my '04 Screw...

I'll be heading up to Central Texas this weekend to haul my 30' BP Dutchmen TT back to Houston. The trailer weighs in ~7000 lbs so it should be a pretty good test coming home through all the hills in and around Austin. I installed the Tekonsha Voyager off my old truck this past week and just bought a weight distributed hitch to help the load. Hopefully, I didn't make a mistake not buying the Firestone Air Bags, thinking the WD Hitch would help level the truck.

I'll post some pics and impressions when I return.

Y'all have a great weekend!

Good luck, have fun and a safe trip. Gas up at a truck stop. A lot of them have public scales now called CAT SCALE. Cost $8+/- and you get separate weights on all 3 sections. Steer axel, Drive axel & Trailer. That way you will know exactly what tire pressure you need to carry the weight at each section. If you take the time to unhook and weigh the truck you will probably get a suprise. I did and found out that my truck full of gas + two coolers & no people weighed 5730lbs. The door sticker says GVWR 6250lbs. That means adding me(200lbs) + wife(140lbs) leaves only 180lbs for the trailer tongue weight ?#@! One bale of hay weighs 120lbs so I guess the truck can carry that plus 7gal water @ 60lbs, leave the trailer home and let the horses run along behind the truck. Maybe Ford doesn't know how many pounds are in a half ton? I'm rambling here but I think that good brakes, correct tire pressure and 55mph will keep me moving safely down the road even if Ford's math is not too good. Happy Trails

fasterhorses,

Great ideas and information! I just went and checked my GVWR and it's 7200 lbs. I figure my truck with me, toolbox and full tank of gas should come in ~5900 lbs. So, I should be ok there, assuming my tongue weight will be ~ 500 lbs with the WD Hitch.

Thanks again!
