Towing MPG
I should also mention, if you can keep the rpm's down below 1800 rpm, you will get good mileage, even when towing. I can tow usually with the OD, unless the transmission frequently shifts up or down, then I turn it off until I get on level road.
Hello sydscrew,
Canada uses imperial gallons. Did you convert your mileage to US gallons or are you posting your mpg in Canadian gallons? 17mpg in Canada would be the same as 14mpg in the US just to give a comparison.

You got me, I forgot about that conversion. Ford says that I should get up to 15 - 19 mpg with the 4.6 in the Supercrew in Canada. I have had that a few times and once in a while above that. Transport Canada states that it costs about $1500.00 in gas money a year. I spend about $1100.00 again in canadian funds, this was for the 2001 model year. I keep forgeting that you americans short change your gallon. LOL
Try converting that into litres. 14.9 / 100 km. is what it works out to.
You are lucky I hate the metric system.

I have a 2003 F150 S-crew 4.6L 4x2 with cab high fiberglass topper. I get 18-19mpg at 75-80mph on the highway, 14.3-14.5 almost every tank in the city, and 8.5-9.5 towing my 7x16 Haulmark tandem enclosed trailer that is probably about 5,000#.
I just bought a wind deflector off eBay and am leaving in 2 weeks for a trip from central FL to northern WV and back. I am going to try and install the wind deflector on the rear of my topper rather than on the cab. This reduced distance should in theory help get the wind up and over the trailer which is about 24" higher than the topper.
I will post a follow up when I get back with the results.

Sydscrew,
Here is what I get converting your 100km/14.9liter to mpgUS. 1km=0.62mi so 100km = 62mi. 1 liter = 0.26galUS so 14.9liters=3.87galUS. Therefore 100km/14.9liters=62mi/3.87galUS. That comes out to 16.0mpgUS. The other conversion would be 1 liter = 0.22galCanada so 14.9liters=3.28galCanada. Therefore 100km/14.9liters=62mi/3.28galCanada. That comes out to 18.9mpgCanada for the same 14.9liters.. Jeez now I have a headache and ran my calculator out of juice
Anyway, your mpg seemed really good but I think you are using Canadian gallons which are bigger than US gallons by 18% so your mpg appears 18% bigger.

Fasterhorses,
I use an excel spreadsheet that I got off the website www.fordf150.net in the downloads section. It tracks my fuel usage. Its very good and I recommend it for anyone interested in their fuel usage. It has accurately tracked my mileage since I bought the truck. I got an instant headache looking at your calculations for conversion of metric to US. Being of the old school, I am partial to MPG regardless of whether it is US or imperial, LOL Unfortunately, I am considered not with it when comparing any fuel ratings.
But, hey, thanks for those calculations, they are an eye opener.
