Ram question
Ram question
Hi guys, got a question regarding a Dodge (no flames please). A co-worker has a 96 ram1500 with a 5.2L bought used. He just bought a 7200lb travel trailer. I say it ain't gonna work for long. Any body know how to tell what the axel is on this truck? Thoughts on how lon it'll last?
Well, he's not gonna be happy with the performance at all. A #7200 travel trailer is mighty heavy, and I would not want to tow it with any 1/2 ton truck.......... I'm not sure on how to ID the rear, but there should be a tag on the rear diff....... It's probably no more then a 3.55 anyway.....
My dad had a 96 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9 V8 AND 4.10 gears in it and tried to tow a #8000 trailer........... It could not get out of it's own way!!
Even the slightest hill caused him to put it in first and rev it up to 4 grand and crawl along at 20 mph or so.........
He only towed it once. Picked up a brand new (at the time) 99 Dodge with the 5.9 Cummins Diesel in it and he tows that same trailer with it to this day. Runs circles around me and still gets 13 mpg TOWING!! I only tow a #4500 travel trailer, and it's all I want to pull. I do just fine, and it tows very well, but I only get 9 mpg towing......
That trailer will just get one more Dodge off the road that much sooner!!
Dodge trannies are a problem to begin with. Even in the 2500 series of that era.......
Good Luck!!
