For those of you that have the tow package and use the 7 prong outlet I need some help. I tow a pop-up camper that has a battery. I have the battey connected so that when I'm pluged-in towing it is supposed to charge the battery. But it does not charge. I am running out of guesses of what the problem is. I checked all the fuses and their fine. Do you have a relay/fuse in location 302? It also dosest seem the have any power wire inside the harness.(I used a test light and touched the orange wire terminal/top one on the right and got nothing) All my trailer lights work fine. Is their even supposed to be a hot wire inside the harness? Please help
You need both the fuse and relay.
I just purchased a Qwest 10B Jayco pop-up so needed to replace my 4 pin with a 7 pin plug. Easy swap. Did it for the same reason to charge the battery.
I had the fuse already but did NOT have the relay (302) so had to buy it, I think it cost like $5 from Ford.
Yes, once you put the relay in there will be a hot wire in the 7 pin plug when either the truck is running or the accessories is on on the key switch (I think).
I believe it is also the same pin used if you have electric brakes.

Your welcome...
I was in the same shape as you to begin with. I connected the 7 pin plug and took me about 30 minutes to figure out I didn't have the relay.
It seems very odd that the fuse for the "battery charge" is there, but yet the relay (that is also needed) is not.
I believe those that buy the trucks with the towing package come with all the relays needed.
Mine "kind of" had the towing package, it had the 4 pin plug on the back, but that was about it. It said, I think, 5400 towing package on the sheet, and I think I have the bigger radiator, not sure. It has the manual transmission.

My truck does have the tow package. I have the 4 pin and the 7 pin harnesses mounted side by side, also have the plug-in for trailer brakes inside. I thought it was kinda crazy to have the fuse and not the relay. (Unless the previous owner took it out for some reason)
I thought untill last winter it was charging the battery. Then when I was hunting in november the furnace would not run and the lights were dim. So i fugured if I plugged in the trailer and started my truck it would charge the battery some. I was wrong again. Oh well
Thanks

Yep, that's what I got now, the 4 pin and 7 pin side by side, it cost me around $48 at Ford. Was real easy to install, just connected right in to where the 4 pin only wiring was at.
As far as the relays coming with the tow package that is what I "believe" I have read on here, but I could be wrong. Good that you found the problem and corrected it. How long have you owned a pop-up and how well do you like it?
I ask because this one I just bought a few weeks ago is my first. Prior to that my daughter and I just went camping with tents.

I have a Rockwood pop up 10ft. I love it, very easy to tow and manuver. I too have done my share of sleeping in tents. Not to often do I now, only when someone with young children come with us and its chilly out I let them sleep inside with the heat and I stay in a tent with the dogs.
Mine is a 94 model. Still in great shape too, the only thing I dont like is I dont have a fridg just a icebox. But I really dont use it anyway, its actually easier to use coolers. Like I said before, I have used it when hunting in November when the temp is around 30 degrees. The furnace keeps it about 60 degrees and if I drape a tarp over the top it will get to about 70.
How often do you camp? We go as often as possible during spring, summer, and fall. Actually we are going this weekend. Have you had a chance to use your new toy yet?

I just went through the same process of figuring out the relay situation after adding the 7/4 pin connect to my truck. I also just purchased a new 10ft Rockwood. Picking it up May 10. But I'm sure hoping that the furnace will do better than 60 degrees at an outside temp of 30. We'll be camping for 2 weeks @ 8,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies in September. Might even be some snow.
Sounds like fun! With your Rockwood being new I'm sure it will hold heat much better. Mine has a few drafts, and I really dont think I have turned the heat up to high. I usually keep it set at 65-70.
I would highly recommend you bring a large tarp. Especially if you suspect snow. Beacuse once the snow hits the canvas and melts and turns to ice its not fun putting down. I had this happen to me once and it was a nighmare. I had to turn the furnace up all the way, and light all the burners on the stove to help melt the ice, Then start chipping the ice off without doing any damage to the canvas. Then once it's done, you have to hurry put it down so it dont freeze again. I guess you could say I learned the hard way.
Anyway, if you dont mind me asking how much does a new pop up cost these days? Have fun in the Rockies.

My Qwest is a 10' one as well it is a 2003. It does have the 16,000btu furnance in it which is nice so I can camp a little longer in the season. It don't have the refrig either just the ice box. To be honest I don't know if I will even use it since I am use to using a cooler when tent camping. Though I think it would be nice to put a block of ice in it and keep the meat and some other things in it so I don't have to worry about keeping them from getting wet in the regular cooler. I'll see how it works out.
This is my first pop-up, and I have yet to use it. The first time my daughter and I will use it is a few weekends from now. May 9 & 10 will be our first time out in it. She is 14 and still loves to go camping, brings a friend with her. As long as there is a lake or pool she is all set. Loves the cooking out doors and of course the camp fire.
When we were tent camping we would usally go every other weekend or so, and maybe a total of 10 - 12 times a year. Since this pop-up has a furnace in it now should be no problem going more. With the tent camping it would just get to cold and/or damp out towards the end of the season, as well as at the begining of the season.
I have an 01 F150 with the 4.2 5-speed and 3.55 L/S and the max weight of this pop-up is 2160 lbs. It probabely weighs around 1950 - 2000 lbs max I am figuring when I load it. It pulls great behind my truck. No problem with power, no problem with stopping, no swaying, at least as of yet. This trailer does not have brakes because it is under the weight limit. I use to tow a race car and it and the trailer were just about maxing my truck out which it is rated for 3800 lbs. Even that was never really a problem.
I am really looking forward to camping with this pop-up. I also visit a site on the web http://www.irv2.com/ it is a really nice site about pop-ups and other trailers and RV'ing. I go by the same screen name.
