Truck doesn't sit level side to side
Truck doesn't sit level side to side
I have noticed that my truck does not sit level from side to side when looking at it from the back. The gap between the top of the tire and the top of the wheel well is off from one side to the other also. The back drivers side seems lower. Could this be a spring or shock problem? I was considering getting helper springs to keep the back end from sagging when I load it up, could they also help level the truck? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mine was off 7/8" from left to right. Ford replaced the left leaf spring. However it was still off 7/8. I went to a 4 wheel shop and had them place a 1" block between the axle and left leaf spring. Problem was solved.
BTW: I took the truck to 3 different Ford dealer service dept and was told the same thing: "Truck is within Ford Level tolerances!"

Mine does it also (lower on driver's side); from what I've read on this site it's not unusual. As for helper springs, they may or not may not work depending on your perspective. I installed a set of Hellwigs (progressive LP-25). I was able to get the truck closer to level but had to tighten the driver's side to almost the maximum setting. I didn't like having one side adjusted so much different from the other so I relaxed the driver's side adjustment to match the passenger's. My plan is to take go to a local spring shop and have them correct things with either a block or an extra leaf on the driver's side. Probably should have just done that to begin with.
Ford actuall sells a shim for this purpose, but they only reccomend 3/4" per side. ('89 fac. shop. man.). I would first make sure that none of the leaves are broken. They may be a little difficult to see as they often break between in the middle by the U-bolts.
I put on a set of roadmaster active suspension helper springs. With these I increased the load handling, greatly reducec body sway, and firmed up the handling, without loosing articulation as with a swaybar. But I was also able to adjust the springs to level the truck side to side. I also tweaked the torsion bars to level the front. The rear now is level and 3/4" higher than the front.

The problem is the gas tank placement. Check your truck with the tank almost empty and then again with it full. The weight of the fuel is causing it to sink on the left. The Silverados and Tahoes have the same problem.
