knocking noise in front suspension
knocking noise in front suspension
i'v got a 2001 scab 4X4, 4.6L with 255 tires , and often enough when drinving the truck around ,,,,,,and happen to take a turn ,,well sometimes there comes a little knocking sound (toc, toc),, from the front suspension. The truck only has 21000km on it , and has never been taken off-road.
When driving normaly,, i rarely if ever hear that noise ,,,,,,mostly happens when i'm making a turn , and happen to hit a couple bumps while turning.
Does anyone else have this problem ,,,and if so ,, what could be causing it or is it normal???
it really isn't to loud ,,,,,but would rather know if it's normal or not to avoid furher problems

I had a similar problem with my truck. Many times when I made a sharp turn going slow I would hear a noise like you described. Finally I put my truck up on a lift to check things out and everything looked tight. But I noticed that the bushing were worn on the sway bar links and there was quite a bit of play there. I replaced the bushings with poly bushings and no more problems. Best of luck to you
thanks alot dreamer7 , that makes sense now that you say that ,,,,,i'm gona check that out soon as i can ,, appreciate it
cause at high speeds,, i don't ever hear that noise ,, only when going slow and mostly when turning about 95% of time it happens when turning and hitting bumps at the same time

Problem is fixed ,,,,,,,i got to lift up my truck and after taking about 15 minutes trying to figure out were this knocking noise was coming from ,,,,,,i found that it wasn't anything in the steering colomn,, neither the sway bar links ,,,,,,,,,,,,it was actually a cab mout that was loose ,, the center scerw that holds it to your floor was loose,, someone from Ford had put the scew in on and angle an only got it in about 1/8 of an inch. So took out the impact and screwed her in ,,,,,,,Works like a charm now and NO MORE KNOCKING noise ,,,,,
My truck has done this since about 10,000 mi....at low speeds, usually while slowing for a stop sign on wash board roads or small bumps. Where did you find that bolt? I know my tranny cross bar member was loose and causing some problems like this, but that has been fixed.

First of this mount i was having problems with is under the passengers side ,,,,,,right under your feet ,,,,,,the Ford trucks have several mounts under them, ,,,,,,,to get to this one ,,,,,,,you simply look under the floor and it's a cylindar shape mount with rubber around it and a centre screw ,,,,,the screw itself is about 6" long,,,,,,,,and what happens if that screw isn't in all the way ,,,,,,well in my case the cab mout jumps around from side to side making a knocking noise ,,,,,,, if the noise comes more towards the back ,,,,,,,the it's one of your box mounts,,,,,,,,the whole trucks sits on mounts and i called and talked to Ford about it and they said to me ,, it's a common problem for some of those mount to get loose over time ,,either cause it wasn't installed properly from the get go or just from the vibration of the truck.
I'm almost certain that this is your problem,,,,, just check it out under your truck ,, check all your mounts ,and i'm sure you'll find one that is loose.
To get it tightened up again ,, take the panels off the side of your floor ,, lift the carpet and right under the carpet you'll find the whole were the mount sits in.
