Anyone lower a 97+ F-150 4X4
I posted a note about installing BellTech's lowering kit on my 2002 F-150 4X4 and haven't received any replies. Am I the only freak on this list who has actually "lowered" their 4X4? Please, somebody out there admit that they either have lowered, or even contemplated lowering, their 4X4. When you live in Cleveland and want to buy a pickup, it had better be a 4X4. But, when the primary purpose for the vehicle is transporting motorcycles, the bed had also better be accessible. The lower, the better. The BellTech kit advertises a 3/4 drop but you can lower the truck even further. However, the factory upper A arm length and adjustment capability begins to limit your ability to eliminate the increasing negative camber. Has anyone done this and encountered this problem. If so, what did you do? If not, I guess I'm on my own.
Thanks,
Ken

To be honest, it was a bitch. The front was relatively easy, just replace the torsion keys with BellTech modified keys, install Nitro Drop shocks, new, smaller, bump stops, and reassemble the front end. The rear, however, was a different story. You need to remove the factory spring hangers in front which are riveted on. If you don't have a compressor and air tools, you'd better have a shop do the installation. I had to grind the heads off, then drill out the rivets to remove them. After that, you bolt on the BellTech hangers, install new, smaller, shims under the axle, new rear hangers (bolt-on), a new spring center bolt (requires large "C-clamps" to hold the spring tension for removal/installation), new bump stops and new Nitro Drop shocks. You need to be careful on the driver's side because fuel lines are routed inside the frame rail there. It took me two complete days to finish it, but I'm really pleased with the results. I just need someone to help me locate new, extended upper A arms or let me know who will custom make a pair for me. That would let me get the ride height I really want. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.
