Dude...Front End Alignment vs Fuel Mileage

OK...gonna check it again on another tank tomorrow, but you guys gotta check this out!! I never get above ~14 mpg on average in the truck, and that's on a good day with all freeway...if I'm lucky. Was noticing some accelerated wear on the inside right front tire, so I took it in for an alignment since I was back in my home town and knew the shop. It was toed out pretty bad, especially the right front; go figure. Don't know what else was adjusted.

Anyways, headed home today. I hit the road with just over 3/4 tank of gas (the first 1/4 was run out around town). Stopped for the first fill up of the trip after all freeway BUT in the rain. I got 15.9 on that tank!!!! Is it even possible the alignment made that much difference? We'll see on the next tank, but thought I'd see if anyone had ever seen anything similar. Nothing else was different with the truck for this leg except a fully polished paint job topped with three coats of DoDo Juice! ;-)

Yes, the truck does not have to push so hard since now it is tracking straight.

Oh, don't get me wrong...I completely agree with the logic, but I just always assumed if one was out bad enough to affect fuel mileage, you'd know it. I woulda thought it'd drive like crap. Mine drove great.

Toe out is worse than the same amount of toe in. The wheels naturally want to toe out going down the road, so starting slightly to in brings it to zero, but being toe out (negative) brings it further out going down the road.

They don't always have to drive bad to be out of alignment. The last 4 trucks I have bought all had to be tweaked a little to get in specs.

Just an update on the second tank of gas; first 1/2 tank was curvy mountain roads in pouring rain. Second 1/2 was freeway. Got a solid 16.0! This is unbelievable. I think it's mostly the DoDo Juice though!! :-)

OK, last tank was 15.2 with all freeway at 70-75 for about the whole tank. However, I think my truck is speed sensitive and thing economy drops above 2,000 rpm for me, so that may be why less than 16 this time.

Same results with my Escape.. After finding front tires cupped I bought 4 new tires and had an alignment done. I picked up at least 4 MPG after that. I was amazed. Live and learn

I get a solid 18 on my '99 4x4 extended cab but run tire pressure about 5 psi higher than called for.
