Clunk in front end. Possibly a blown shock?
2004 2wd STX with a 6" PC stage 2 lift, cranked up to 8" in the front with 33" Nitto Trail Graps.
I have a clunk coming from the front left suspension when i go over certain bumps. It has been doing this for a couple months now but has not gotten any worse. It started a few weeks after i cranked the coilovers down to raise the front. All bolts from the lift have been re torqued so a loose bolt is not the problem. I basically gave up trying to figure it out. But then i thought maybe my shock is bad in my coil over. It kind of sounds like the shock bottoms out when i hit the bump. When leaving the parking lot at my work, the curb going into the street has a severe drop off, maybe a 4" drop and it sounds like the ram in the shock slams down in the housing. But then again, it only does it on certain bumps. Could a coilover cause the sound i am describing? Is there gas in the shocks that could have leaked out? Is there any way to check if the shock is bad? I dont want to spend $1K on new coil overs to find out the old ones are fine. The coil overs are the same ones that come in the ProComp Stage 2 lift. I forgot to mention all 4 ball joints were replaced last year, tie rods have been checked out by a shop and they said they were fine. Sway bar end links were just replaced this year as well.
Ha well that pretty much scratches those off as possibilities. How many miles are on the truck? And since you cranked them to get another 2" when the shock is fully extended like when you flex does it seem like the spring now has play in it? Also the clunk could be spring bind or it rubbing on something when it droops and then compresses. I'm just throwing out a bunch of ideas right now ha.
i have 52,000 on the truck. I bought the lift used, no idea how many miles previous owner put on the shocks. I have put maybe 5k miles on the shocks since i cranked them. I will have to get the truck off the ground today after work to see if there is any play in the spring.
Check for marks on the spring to see if the upper control arm is making contact. The marks would be on the outboard side of the spring.

There were no marks on the spring.
It also kind of sounds like the whole tire/suspension moves/shifts back toward the rear when i hit some bumps. But maybe its just me.

Check your cam bolts on the LCA's. This is always where the clunks come from. Torque the hell out of that nut but don't spin them. Make sure you use a paint pen and mark them also to tell if they are slipping or spinning. Those stupid cams always always slip, just a crap design if you ask me.
