Clunking noise after level kit install

Howzit all?

I just had a 2" ProComp leveling kit installed on my 2010 FX2 and am hearing a distinct "clunk" noise coming from the front end (i think passenger side) when going over speed bumps.

Any ideas? I'm of course taking it back to the shop in the morning but would like to have some additional knowledge before talking to the mechanic.

I've done my DD (due diligence) on this site and came up with the following potential remedies: (though most of the posts I found were relating to trucks 5 years old and older.)

- tighten sway bar end links
- tighten strut nuts on top of coil overs
- tighten three nuts on top of strut tower

Sway bar links were all tight
Strut nuts needed a little tightening but not much
Passenger side strut tower nuts needed about 1-1.5 turns each

Took the truck over a few bumps afterwards to test and the noise is still there.

Along with the level kit, I also installed a set of brand new FX4 shocks for the additional 1" lift. Tires are 305/55 20's on stock FX2 wheels.

I'm stumped. The truck has only 2500 miles on it and the kit was installed just this past Sat. I haven't had it aligned yet. The shop recommended that I drive it for a few days first to let things settle.

Thanks in advance.

Even with the "offset" on the 2" AS leveling kit, the upper control arm hits the spring at full extension (i.e. sitting on a jack). Perhaps you are hitting your spring. It is easy to tell, just look for the impact mark on the spring (small dent, scuffed paint).

That's what I'm thinking. Especially since you combined a leveling kit and longer coilovers for 3 inches of lift.

Thanks guys. Yep, that's exactly what it is. I was hoping that with alignment that might go away but no such luck.

I'm surprised that others with 2" level kits aren't experiencing the same. I know mine is a 4x2 but from what I've read here and my discussions with the Ford parts guy, 4x4's and 4x2's share the same control arms, springs, etc., nothing different. With putting the stock 4x4 coil overs up front and keeping the spacer at 2" I was hoping to have no issues.

The truck is strictly a pavement driver so I don't expect this issue to really be anything to worry about. Even though, I will probably be switching the coil-overs to Bilstein 5100's (for ride quality) and at that time may lower the front by 1/2" to get that extra space back between the UCA and the spring.

Should have went with the 5100's in the first place. Oh well, live and learn. I'll post the results when it happens.
Thanks again.

I just bought a 2010 FX2, This question doesn't have anything to do with your noise issue but How close are you to rubbing at the 3 o'clock position on your fender flare? It seems you have plenty of room at the 9 o'clock position at your bumper.. Im thinking of leveling my truck and want to see if its at all possible to squeeze 35's on.

With the wheels turned to the right there's not much room between the tire and the lower valance and the left tire rubs the sway bar on hard left turns.

There's more close ups of the clearance issues in my profile albums.

I just installed a 2.5" leveling kit on my 2014 fx4 and I hear the same clanking sound when I go over a speed bump or a pot hole at around 5-15 mph, I wonder if the same thing is happening to my truck?

Way to resurrect a thread that's been dead fer 5 years, lol.

Probably. Have you checked? Could also be fastener torques - or lack thereof. Which could be kinda disastrous.

Additionally, yer BJ's and CV's are now at severe angles and are at risk of wearing out prematurely. 2.5" is pushing it on these trucks.

Worth it? Nope. Reckon no one actually researches stuff like this anymore, before pulling the trigger on such ignancy. WTF were you thinking?

Kiss ye front suspension warranty goodbye. Oye.

Seriously now - it's not too late to reverse this mod - go to 1-1.5" max or stock height until the warranty expires.

I wanted to add some bigger tires in the truck that's why I added the leveling kit. I just installed it this weekend and I checked this morning and it seems like the upper control arm is hitting the spring and hats probably what's causing the noise.

I might revert it back and or go to a 1-1.5 leveling kit what do you suggest?

Resurrecting an old thread is never a bad thing, that means they used the search function instead of just starting a new thread!!

I installed a leveling kit on my 04 but after much research on here, which led me to find that 2" level is max. My control arms do touch the springs but only during full droop. Haven't had ball joint issues yet but did have a proper alignment done when I installed the leveling kit and 33's. The 33's fit perfectly, no rub lock to lock or during compression or droop.
