Leveling Question
Leveling Question
New to this forum thing, so hoping this goes to the right place to get some info:
I am looking at replacing my shocks w/ leveling shocks. I've read a lot about the Bilstein 5100 leveling shocks and the Rancho Quick Lifts. I like the height options and the design advantages (advertised) of the Bilsteins, but like the adjustability of the Rancho 9000s for the rear, as I tow a 22 ft camper frequently in the summer and don't want the front end pointing skyward while towing.
First: Any input on the idea of putting Bilsteins on the front and Ranchos on the rear? I have NO brand loyalty....
Second: Will the Ranchos set stiff keep my rear from sagging while towing? Or will I run into ride-quality issues w/ the two different brands? I do have a weight distributing hitch for the camper that pretty much levels it right now when towing, but with the added 1.5 - 2.0 inches of lift w/ the Bilsteins, don't want it to be a star gazer when towing.
Lastly: For anyone who has replaced their fronts w/ EITHER of these shocks, would you recommend going w/ new (factory spec) front springs while I'm at it? My 05 SuperCrew has 66,000 miles on it.
Thanks!

great thread...
i'm looking at putting a 2.5" leveling kit on but don't want to be sitting way high in the front while towing the camper (22' ultralight). i've heard of putting an add-a-leaf in the rear but wondered about this increasing the rear lift.
help us please!!

I would run Bilstein's all the way around and do the Firestone ride rite air bags on the rear to take care of sagging while towing/hauling..You will not have any rear lift issues with bags...I love the ride of my bilsteins.. I put them on my FX4 with 60,000 miles, and did not do new springs.. IMO it rides better than it did new..
nate136,
Thanks for the input. I sent a bunch of emails out to different retailers with the same inquiry. Several of them said the same thing you did: Bilsteins with the Firestone bags.
How would YOU describe the ride change after installing the Bilsteins (when not towing)? Stiffer, rougher, comparable, or what?

P.S.:
vtjenkins: regarding the add-a-leafs, I've heard it makes for a much stiffer ride. I was also looking at the spacers for leveling until I read Bilsteins description of how their shocks perform over the spacers. Granted, it is in their best interest to convince me/everyone of this to sell the stuff, but the mechanics of it makes sense. I'm keeping my truck for a loooong time, so I don't mind putting the money into it. Good luck.

I did the Bilstein HDs with a spacer because I was too impatient to wait on the 5100 backorder at the time. To me the ride is slightly stiffer than stock, but feels much better
when cornering and more "secure" when towing. I tow a 26ft travel trailer occasionally and
a 19ft bass boat frequently..The bilsteins pretty much eliminated my bed shake too!! I installed the spacers and shocks myself. Not too bad, just need a good spring compressor for the front.. From what i understand the bag install is pretty easy too. Hope this helps,
