Angry Front 4x4 axle

I hit major pothole on highway and then made loud clanking noise looked at axle the axle appears came out of place and has what looks to be like a big gear on end of shaft splines has anyone had that happen before? I was 100 miles from home and took my torch and cut off end axle so would stop clanking as i drove and saw that big gear looking thing on it do i just need a new axle to fix my 4x4 on my truck or do i need to replace my wheel bearing as well i havent taken it off yet. Please Help

Sounds like he broke a CV joint and cut the half shaft to get going.

rjm is correct there is a big round looks like a gear that goes in the wheel portion thats attached to the splines on the CV joint portion that came out of back of wheel bearing. It came out with the CV joint did this come out of the wheel bearing?

I am trying my best to follow you, but not quite there. If it is your cv shaft you are talking about there is a coupling (round plate) coming from the font differential it connects to then goes into your hub/bearing assembly. There is an upper and lower joint/universal (covered by a boot), perhaps the "gear" you are referring to is the lower joint? If thats whats broken all you need to do is replace the cv shaft. Like trimble said, pics would be nice.
