I must be stupid

OK, I've got 107K on my 03 KR f150 4x4 and I decided I needed new shocks. I picked up a set of bilstein HD's only because they said they didn't make 5100 series for the 03 models. anyway, I'm jonesing for some tips and or tricks for the front and rear replacement procedure. I put the 18mm socket on the rear bolt and used a pipe wrench on the body of the stock shock and the socket wrench kept bumping off. I tried a closed end wrench but it wouldn't bite either. What am I doing wrong? If I am having this much trouble already with the rears what the hell am I in for in the front?

THX

Kevin

It took me about 30 minutes to install my shocks. It's a simple bolt on procedure. I don't recall a 18mm bolt being involved.

cresant wrenches work pretty well. so do impact wrenches when getting stuff apart. also some WD-40 works wonders, spray some on and let it sit for about 5 mins and go at it.
