What size lift... 4,6,8?
I'm torn as to what size lift to get. With a 4" I can run 35's which is as big as I want to go, though a Rize 8" with 37's looks badass. A 6" would be cool too but would it look weird with the huge gap since a 4" fits? Going to be a while before I get it but I want to do alot of research before I get it.
I've seen this question asked thousands of times. My advice is to go with the largest combo you are considering. I've seen so many members here and at FTW install lifts, and then turn around and spend more money and labor installing a larger lift and tires. Think about it carefully and go with as big as you want and can afford.
Personally i like the shortest lift you can get and fit the largest tires. If you off road at all you are not going to want anything bigger than 35s with an ifs front suspension, and either way you are going to have to regear if you want to keep your tranny in good order. Not to mention its the cheapest. my 2 cents
I second that!! I thought a long time about a 6" and 35's. But in the back of my head I was always thinking was I going to be happy with it or would I have wished I had gone bigger. So just as Wandell said, if your thinking it, just do it. I am so glad I did.
So if I go with the 8" lift, I'm going to re-gear for sure. It would probably be cheaper to get a 6" with a 3" body lift wouldn't it? But then again with 9" of lift I'd be running 37's and have to re-gear anyway. Hmmm...

oh and to the guy that said you can't offroad with bigger tires than 35's, that's completely untrue. i off-road and mud bog about once every week or so with no problems at all so far, and with my 38's i can make it through more mud in 2wd than i could in 4wd with my 35's.
This is a totally subjective question with no real "right" answer. Wandell has it correct but I would add: go with the biggest lift you can live with. So yes, wanting and affording are HUGE, but if you already know that you want to go bigger, then I would do it the first time around. Sure, I'd LOVE a Rize 8" w/ 38's but a 4" lift is all I could live with for now: short wife and occasionally driving around a toddler and infant in car seats so anything bigger is senseless. I may add my old spring spacer when the kids get a little bigger (or I get another car for the car seats), but that's about it and I am fine with that. But it sounds like you're in a different situation and already considering an 8 incher, my bet is that you'd regret a 4" and maybe even a 6", so get the 8" already.
As for cost, my guess is that you're gonna need about $6 grand (lift, wheels, tires, gears, labor, etc) to get it done right and the bigger the tires, the bigger the cost. I also strongly believe the bigger the lift and tires, the bigger the cost for ongoing maintenance. This may or may not be a determining factor for you but I thought I'd share my opinion.

If you even consider a larger lift, say like you have put the possibilities of a 4",6", or 8", the fact you are considering an 8" lift means you should just go with an 8" lift

I'm going to get the Rancho 4" with them R9000XL's but in many years from now when i have another truck and this one turns into my beater. im going to get the Rize 12".
so i think you should do with what works with your budget and also fits the tire size you want cuz going to big just means you are going to have other things to change then just gears. (like your drive line?)

Also, 38" MTs vs 35" ATs is a silly comparison.
yeah i have been trying to take it easy though on the mud because im tired of washing the thing, but that's the thing, a truck with 35's just flat out cannot make it through some of the stuff we play in. my CV angles are just like stock.
oh yeah and im at 40K right now and i have not had even the smallest problem with the truck since the day i got it 3 years ago with the exception of one blow out but that was on the road and i blame nittos crappy terra grappler.
