leveling kit

are these mainly for the look or to fit larger tires?

Just here alot about them and don't really want it any higher might go with a little larger tire when I get new rims but will be sticking to the 17".

Both. Most people want their truck to sit closer to level than they come from the factory and most want to go up at least a tire size.

if I don't use a leveling kit can I still go up on tire size some if I stick to a 17 inch rim?

Yes. You can easily fit a 285/70-17 or 305/65-17 on a stock 4x4.
