Do I need tuning?
Hi, I'm planning on purchasing a 2008 Ford F-150 FX4 5.4L v8 SuperCrew and I'm a bit curious as to what benefits I could hope to receive with a Troyer Performance custom tuned X3 tuning. A few specs of my near future daily driver truck would ideally include..
6" ProComp Stage 1 lift
20" ProComp Series 7005 wheels
35"x12.50" ProComp Extreme A/T tires
Magnaflow SIDO rear exit cat-back system
AF1 intake 3.5"
I don't plan on using this truck for much more than driving around town (mostly in city), and have made the previous selections based on exterior appeal, in addition to slight performance increases. A question about the air intake though, I'm not a 100% sure whether I should need the 3" or the 3.5"? Furthermore, do I actually need a tune, or will my truck run efficiently enough as is taking into consideration the mods I have chosen.
Thanks in advance, I hope you can help!

First of all, your truck as it comes from the factory, has a "stock" tune in your PCM. A "stock" tune is not bad. It works great for millions of Americans every day who drive "stock" cars. But once you begin to modify your car, your PCM needs to know how to compensate for these modifications. So if you plan on changing your car from it's original equipment configuration, then yes, you should have custom tuning.
I see that you have been doing your homework. Mike Troyer is a very reputable "tuner" for the F150 trucks. Perhaps you should speak with Mr. Troyer prior to making any modifications. He may be able to guide you with the proper modifications for performance. Troyer Performance also sells, in addition to tuners and tune files, a variety of performance parts including the cold air intake and exhaust that you are considering.
But none of this means anything since you haven't bought the truck yet. Aren't you putting the wagon ahead of the horse?

True, I haven't bought the truck yet, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Money isn't necessarily an issue with purchasing the parts, but I certainly don't want to buy things I don't need or won't see any noticeable gains. Then again, that's a bit hypocritical of myself, being that I don't really "need" a truck at the moment, but it wouldn't hurt to have one.
The truck will consistently be used for daily city driving, and like I said, most of the features I've selected awere based on cosmetic choices, the lift, exhaust note, and etc.
Anywho, thaks for the reply I suppose I'll try giving Troyer a call for more details.

If you buy the truck stock and drive it around for a little while and then make all those mods it'll feel like you're driving a totally different truck. The seat of the pants feeling will be huge over stock. The 3.5" AF1 requires custom tuning while the 3" AF1 does not. I went with the 3" AF1 even though I got custom tuning at the same time just so I could return my truck back to the stock tune for trips to the dealership without having the reinstall the stock intake.
